Long-distance move from San Antonio, TX to Vacaville, CA

PREDATORY COMPANY

Working with this company was a NIGHTMARE from start to finish.

TLDR; gave great initial quote, hiked up price by almost double 6 days before pickup, multiple broken items on arrival.

I was allured to this company based on a quick timeline and a reasonable quote. They also seemed to have good reviews online, and like many, I ignored the very legitimate warnings from others to avoid this company. I originally spoke to a Josh King. I walked through all the items in my house, leaving out a couple pieces of furniture that I wasn’t sure I was going to bring with me from my move from Texas to California. He gave me a quote and I signed the contract after reviewing the items. I was told I should receive a phone call again to make sure that all the items were up to date.

Six days before my pickup window, I received another phone call with Michael, one of the managers who had me again walk through the items in my house. He began nit-picking on the items saying “Oh Josh put those chairs down as chairs but they are really ‘Everyday chairs’ which adds some square footage” and that “large bin is actually a plastic wardrobe” etc. I did also add my outdoor patio furniture but ended up not taking a whole living room dining set due to the increase in price. With the addition of my patio furniture and all these little changes, Michael increased my quote almost double. I’m sure they are going to respond that I had multiple items added and the square footage increased yadda yadda yadda (this was led by their first person giving an inaccurate representation of my goods). At this point, they knew they could because I was military and needed to PCS to my next duty station. And it would be impossible to book with another company on that short notice. Michael had a violent lack of empathy and even stated “yea did Josh do the best at estimating your stuff? I agree probably not.” But I’m the one who got rolled by it. It is clearly a pattern that they do to draw people in and then bait and switch close to pickup to increase their profits.

Anyway, I ended up signing the updated contract because I was honestly backed into a corner. They sub-contracted out to a local San Antonio company Jackson Movers, who was also a nightmare to work with. No one explained the insurance options to me and many of my expensive items were broken to include my 70 inch TV and my mattress (I didn’t even know you could break a mattress but here we are). The insurance also defaults to 60cents per lb which is ludicrously low.

Lastly, It really doesn’t make sense to use this company. There was a HUGE brokerage fee which could be avoided by just choosing a reputable local company that can VISUALIZE your stuff in person and give you a locked in quote.

The actions of this company were nothing short of predatory. So in short, AVOID AT ALL COSTS.

Official company response

Hello,
We are sorry that the move took place as you described, this is never our intention. Please understand, you mentioned yourself that you left items off the original estimate. The table that was in discussion and the change that needed to be made was very little as to additional cf. Being that we are a broker and have to contract the job out to one of our network carriers, it is our job to ensure the inventory list is accurate. Overages on-site can be extremely costly being that additional labor, material, and sometimes additional trucks are needed. We would rather the carrier go out there prepared. We would ask that as the customer take some responsibility and accountability. It seems the customer is so quick to jump on the broker for the errors when in essence they sign an agreement stating in the event these situation may arise the customer is responsible, then they turn around, breach, and blame the broker/moving coordinator. This is considered defamation from a legal stand point.
The majority of our moves go extremely well, we are involved with over 5k moves annually. Unfortunately, the small percentage of them that do not go well end up on these review sites. We are very pleased with our success rates, but will continue to do what we can to improve them.
At the end of the day customers have to pay for what they move. If items are left off, the moving company can not be held responsible for the overages. Everyone would take advantage of the moving companies when over the phone estimates are conducted.
Long distance moving is a privilege and folks who are doing their best to watch finances should be performing self moves in order to save the most money. Furthermore, this is a broker driven industry, these carriers rely on us as we do them. A lot goes into this process, there's are sales teams, customer service teams, verification agents, dispatch team, and the movers, we all work together and rely on each other to make these long distance moves happen.

Zero stars

Do not use this moving service. They are thieves. I was in a very horrible situation. Scheduled a move in a time of extreme distress. Gave them $1500 deposit. I had to cancel my move. I didn't even have an official day set. They are only refunding me $300. Now I'm homeless. I'm going to write reviews everywhere l, everyday, so everyone knows the intentions and poor character of the people running this company. Do not use this company

Move size: 2 Bedroom Home Service cost: $1500

Official company response

Hello Kelley,
As discussed over the phone, we are here to move you, however, moves cannot be cancelled last minute when a carrier is already dispatched. This verbiage it stated in our contract and you were made aware of its terms by signing in multiple places when agreeing to the move with us.
This is a business and we do have policies in place for a reason, money goes into these routes especially when moves are booked last minute and we have to move mountains to find a carrier.

DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY

I am not typically one to write a review however my goal is to save another family from having the same experience. We were initially quoted about 4k from City Moving Group who connected us with Great American Van Lines for a move from Massachusetts to Colorado.

Our quote then doubled with the final inventory list which seemed unfortunate but not unrealistic given the size of our move. However, once Oren (Great American Van Line) and his crew showed up at our house, the truck was loaded they demanded an additional 4k in CASH. We were charged multiple additional fees which were not disclosed by City Moving Group after an itemized and accurate list was finalized by this company including fuel charges, a shuttle service that was never used, wrapping fees and bulk items surcharges. I wish I could remember the name of the owner who spoke with my husband and I on the phone because we were VERY MISLEAD. Total our move cost about 12k and we had no indication to think our cost would TRIPLE or we would have rented a uhaul and done it ourselves

Once the movers arrived in Colorado they unloaded the truck while drinking beer (then driving again to their next location) tried to give us items that were not ours, my husband had to go through the semi-truck himself to make sure items were not lost and still some were. The items in the truck were absolutely destroyed. The response from the movers was "what do you expect." Complete disregard for customers paying thousands expected to get their items safely moved. This is a complete bait and switch organization and complete scam artists.

OVERALL AVOID THIS COMPANY AT ALL COSTS

Move size: 2 Bedroom Home Service cost: $12000

Official company response

Hello,
We do apologize for any inconveniences during your move. Please understand that folks have to pay for what they move. In the event that additional items need to be moved or additional packing is required, the movers have to charge for these services. Please know as the broker, we do not make additional money in this case. That being said it does not benefit us for your cost to increase. As to the movers drinking, this is news to us. In some cases customers have offered the guys a beer after the job. We hope that this was not turned around on them being that some items were damaged.
If further assistance is needed, please reach out to the customer service department as would would be happy to help or assist in filing a claim with the insurance carrier.

Save yourself the headache

This "company" gave me a quote of $3,482.

After booking and paying a deposit with them, a representative called me 2 weeks before my move date to go over final inventory.

When going over the inventory, there were several things the first representative missed.

There were also discrepancies with how the items were listed.

For example,

The original quote listed a small kitchen table with 4 chairs.

On the final inventory, the rep said, "4 chairs for a small table? A small kitchen table wouldn't have 4 chairs?"

My smaller sized kitchen table does in fact have 4 chairs.

The rep said that it would need to be listed as a large table.

The first rep listed the table as a small table!!

The quote then changed to $6,627.

That is $3,145 more than the original price!

Being that the original price almost doubled, I asked for my deposit back.

The rep kept talking about the market and how they would fill the space really fast, however they would not be giving me my deposit back.

After going back and forth, they said they might be able to give back $150 to $250 of the original deposit. The original deposit was $1,362.

The dishonesty is baffling.

Move size: 2 Bedroom Home Service cost: $6700

Official company response

Hello,
Unfortunately the customer gave the moving coordinator an inaccurate inventory list. When it was time to make changes she had additional items to add and found it convenient to blame the moving coordinator for the overages.
The person writing this review was not even responsible for the financial side of the move as there was another party who we were in constant communication with who understood what took place.
We are hear to move families the right way, when an over the phone inventory is conducted it is the customer responsibility to provide the moving coordinator with an accurate inventory list. It is not City Moving responsibility when overages incur, this would lie on the customer as stated in the agreement which the customer signed off on. We did make the customer a compensation offer in effort to find common ground, unfortunately they became belligerent and making threats to harm our company which are unrealistic.
As a long distance moving company we want customer to have the proper piece of mind going into the move. The last thing families need is a revision on-site which can be much more costly then doing a revision in Quality Assurance and allowing us to prepare the foreman and the crew for the adjustment.
Thank you,

Long-distance move from Rhode Island to California

Move from east coast to San Diego

I never write reviews but I had to write one for this company. If possible, avoid at all costs. They charged me nearly double after arriving to my apartment and loading their truck, claiming there were more items than I originally stated. This was not true. After they loaded their truck with all my furniture, they had me sign contracts and gave me information about the drop off. When I got to CA to be there for the delivery, they told me everything was sitting in a warehouse in New Jersey and that I was not allowed to ask the carriers information about the delivery, even though they were sent by the company to pick up my furniture and deliver it. After being roughly 2 weeks late with the delivery, they brought my furniture scratched, and the base board for the bed was entirely missing. They brought me someone else's base board, which clearly was too small, and when I stated this wasn't mine, they told me to file an insurance claim and they just left the board on the grass outside.

They also charged me an extra fee per stair after arriving in CA, even though I repeatedly stated multiple times that there would be stairs. They asked me a bunch of questions during the initial signup process but it feels like they didn't actually take note of anything and then they just charged me for everything on the spot when it all should have been included in the initial quote. Do yourself a favor and find a different mover

Official company response

Sanchi,
We informed you if you had additional items to be moves the cost would increase. We provide a binding estimate based on the inventory listed on the contract. If you deviate from that inventory list the cost would increase as we have to charge by space occupied on the truck.

They are terrible! They are a scam- Customer service is terrible! Do NOT use them. They will destroy your belongings. Charged me $16, 900 to move from NC to SC(300 miles). They will charge you extra for stairs in the house, they are scammers! They take no account of the way they treat you. When you give them your inventory they will quote you a price (mine was $8700) and then they call you 3 days to confirm your inventory, they will double the charge. Mine came to $16, 900. You are stuck paying it because you have already paid them a nonrefundable deposit and you have to have all your belongings out of your home to close on your house. They are a nightmare. No return calls if you leave a message- You have no recourse!

Do NOT use them, there better movers out there!

Move size: 4 Bedroom Home Service cost: $16900

Official company response

Hey Ruth,
Were so sorry to see this review on MMR. When reviewing your file it appears we were in constant communication with you throughout the course. The general manager provided his direct number after you made the father large increase to the inventory prior to pickup as well.
A couple of days we the customer service team placed a call to follow up and ask why you felt you were scammed. The file indicated you weren't able to say why you felt you were scammed.
When a customer cost goes up, it is simple due to them adding items to the inventory. In this case you added 508 cf. Which is a large increase based on our normal moves and revisions. We simple added the items, had to pivot with trucks and crews, then provide you the new price which you signed off on and agreed to. File does show that the truck was a day late due to some weather, this unfortunately does happen as we cannot load a truck in the rain.
Please know, we are always doing our best to improve as a company and provide the best quality of services available. We want to ensure these moves go smooth and do not cause additional unneeded stress for families.
If there is something we can do, obviously within reason, please reach out to the customer service department as we are here and willing to help.

Stay away.

We have not often regretted doing business with a company so much as i do with city moving group.  From the always increasing prices to poor communication, we feel horrible about giving ANY money to this company and those associated with the company.  We truly would have been better off paying thousands more with a company that provides smooth and effective customer service - from the bottom to the top.  Movers - the labor - barely communicate and when so, ineffectively.   Our delivery movers were abusive, threatening, and vulgar. Once the mover got up in my face, puffed out his chest and said "I am from New Jersey! I have no problem driving away with your stuff. Try me. " - the guy was within 2 inches of me shouting. They made inappropriate remarks to my girlfriend - out of the blue asking her "Why don't you smile?". CityMovingGroup offered a $400 credit, but in the confusion I had with their emails and the stress of the move, I missed their arbitrary deadline to accept the offer. Now they flatly refuse because 'doing the right thing' has a time limit. TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE - and I've moved 17 times in 35 years; even international 4 times and nothing has been this bad. Please, please do not use this service.

Move size: 3 Bedroom Home Service cost: $7500

Official company response

Hello,
We do apologize for how to move and went and how the movers handled themselves. They claimed to us they were being threatened of not being paid and unfortunately did not handle the situation professionally. We have removed them from our network of carrier's and no longer work with them. When we dispatched the job to them they were up to date on all the requirements of the DOT and they serviced your pickup area. Due to the mishap, we did approve a $400.00 compensation offer which was sent out back in August. We also notified you guys it would be sent out for signature in order to receive the refund. Our system shows it was viewed by customer on 09/29/2022 @ 10:21 am.... Why was this just now signed a few days ago? This agreement was never signed and did expire.

Bait and Switch - Would give 0 if could

I reached out to CMG to move my family from TX to FL, the gave me a quote over the phone, then 4 days before to arrive called and we went over my goods, they now doubled my quote and now not able find a new mover! Then day of the move, Jackson Movers shows up and tells me will cost me even more. Jackson Movers whom they raved about were not very professional, I paid for a full pack, for them a full pack was taking wardrobe boxes and just dump as much as they could in each and on to the next. Please, do not use this company EVER!

Capable Movers!

The four-man team that arrived were truly exceptional workers. They put in a lot of effort, rushed, and we were all courteous, willing to assist, and extremely delicate when carrying all of our belongings. They hauled everything up the hill and wheeled the larger items up on dollies when the truck couldn't navigate our narrow driveway. The best moving team I've ever had was them!

Excellent movers

In the previous couple of years, I engaged City Moving Group for three different relocation. They do a fantastic job with every element of our relocation, and each and every one of their personnel has been really professional. As opposed to simply putting the boxes in a room and calling it a day, as many other moving firms do, the workers appear to care about where we want the boxes placed. I would suggest them to anybody looking to employ excellent movers, even if we plan to not move again very soon.
