Long-distance move from Los Angeles, CA to Laurel, MD

Great Service.

I used Charter Van Lines to transport my car from California to the east coast and could not have been happier with the level of service I received. I spent hours getting quotes from multiple companies and Charter was by far the lowest with no surprises or hidden fees. The vehicle was picked up in a timely fashion, the driver was courteous and professional. The car arrived at the destination without incident and in pristine condition. This was my first time shipping a car long distance, so I was a bit anxious, but Charter made the process as smooth and pain free as possible. They provided me with great service at a reasonable price and I would not hesitate to use them again in the future.

Long-distance move from Boca Raton, FL to Portland, OR

Great moving experience!

When I found out I would have to move across the country for my job, I was pretty worried about the actual moving process. I had moved from state to state before but never this far. I knew I couldn't do it on my own so I had to hire some help. Luckily, I found Charter Van Lines. After talking to them about the move, they seemed like the best fit. Everyone I talked to at Charter Van Lines was very knowledgeable and helpful too. They had given me a reasonable quote and were easy to communicate with. When my belongings arrived at the destination, they were in perfect condition. The movers seemed professional and responsible. The entire process went very smoothly. I can't think of a single complaint!

Long-distance move from Los Gatos, CA to Jacksonville, FL

Great, Reliable Company.

Usually I wouldn't ask for help moving. But I had to move cross-country on very short notice for my job. I looked into different companies, and found that Charter Van Lines had a lot of good reviews. I called to talk to them about the move, and their patiently answered my questions. They were also happy to accommodate me on short notice, and gave me a reasonable quote.

I was nervous when all of my belongings were packed up, but when I opened them I found that nothing had broken. My plate-ware, instruments, and furniture had all survived a cross-country move, which is really a miracle.

It's difficult to find a reliable moving company, but Charter Van Lines is definitely one of the best in the business. I would suggest them to any friend.

So happy I found this service!

I honestly was having the most stressful time trying to figure out how to move everything in my home from Florida to California, but a friend recommended that I check out Charter Van Lines, and I am so glad she did! Their agents connected me with the right resources, gave me a simple job code #C4450612, and the rest of the process was so easy. I would definitely use them again!

Long-distance move from Clearwater, FL to Albuquerque, NM

Not trustworthy.

This site has a list of tips to know you are headed for a scam. This sales guy did everything they warned you about: 1) he gave me an estimate over the phone based on my description of the room, 2) he wanted me to put down a $2K deposit to hold the truck and dates, and 3) he offered me a "book it now" price and offered a coupon because I used AT&T. Oh, and the best part..I am expected to wrap my own mattresses. All I had to do was give him my credit card number. Apparently, I fell off the dump tuck yesterday.

Moving.

Under no circumstances should you hire this organization. I could go through and discuss how terrible my move was, but much of what this organization did has been covered by the other reviews. I will be brief and say that this is not a real mover, but rather a moving broker. They set me up with a mover called State to State Movers. When I called the Better Business Bureau, the person with whom I spoke stated that State to State Movers is a "rogue mover". It does not provide quality service or respond to Better Business Bureau complaints. It then sets itself up under a new name after a few years. When moving, always try to get a referral from a friend and check with the Better Business Bureau.

Nervous first-time mover--now a happy customer!

I recently hired Charter Van Lines to help me with a move. I was feeling overwhelmed, as I was nervous about hiring someone to help me move to another state. I was afraid it'd be expensive and difficult. I did some research on several companies, and decided to take a chance on Charter Van Lines.

I called them up to get some information. They were polite and informative from the get-go. I think they could tell I was nervous, but they answered all the questions I had. Great customer service and patience! They helped me set up the move and offered me a fair quote.

When we arrived at my new home, the team unloaded everything and helped me get it in order. All my belongings were undamaged. I was so relieved and pleased with all the hard work they did.

Thank you to this efficient, professional team. You made a scared first-time mover into a calm, happy customer! I highly recommend their services.

Thank You!

I used this company to move from New York to California. I was extremely nervous because I have heard some horror stories about moving. This company was friendly, professional and on time. All my belongings came damage free and I was beyond impressed that they came on time. When I called for a quote they were friendly and professional. I would recommend.

Charter Van Lines Exceeded my Expectations!

Charter Van Lines exceeded my expectations!
As a Customer Service Training & Development Coach it is uncommon for me to be impressed with a Company's Customer Service. From my initial call through the entire process I was treated with respect, thoughtfulness, and courtesy.

The Movers took excellent care of my items and treated them as if they were theirs. It's hard to trust strangers with your sentimental items but Charter Van Lines took extra time to wrap and pack each item and never made me feel like they were just throwing things in boxes to get the job done. I was extra nervous since the move was from Pa to Ohio.

Unfortunately, my plans did not go as I initially anticipated and when I called in to see if I could change the arrangements I was pleasantly surprised at the eagerness they portrayed to help me. The Representative never made me feel like I was a burden & even went above and beyond to make things as easy for me as possible. She could tell I was overwhelmed with the whole moving process and she did everything she could to make it go as smooth and convenient for me as possible.

With the change in plans, I was under a super tight time frame. I was so appreciative that the Guys were on time and went straight to work. When I explained my situation they did everything possible to meet my schedule without jeopardizing the care needed to ensure my property wouldn't be damaged.

I will forever be grateful.

Long-distance move from Detroit, MI to Orlando, FL

Worst company I have ever worked with.

I would give this company zero stars if I could. I understand they are a middleman for moving companies, but what they promised and what followed are unethical and extremely poor business practice.

"Mac" their salesman was super nice, explained how they worked, and indicated a 2-9 day delivery from Michigan to Florida "because we are located there and drive there many times every week". He also guaranteed only the movers would touch my stuff at one end, and the same company would unload at the other end and it would never be in storage or handled by others "because they move this route every day". After contracting with them, Mac could never be reached again. This is probably a pseudonym for all of their phone contractors.

The move was picked up on time by Midwest Movers - one of the lousiest moving companies in the business and have had their BBB membership revoked (I later found out). The moving guys themselves were super nice I have to admit.

Then the nightmare began. First, they upped the charge by over a thousand dollars and my gross weight and volume was LESS than what had originally been quoted.

Then it SAT IN STORAGE somewhere in limbo for 78 DAYS --- yup you read that right. Contacting Midwest movers was met by one excuse after another, and at one point they asked "what month where you picked up". What MONTH??

Charter and Midwest Movers clearly hadn't communicated well because then there was a fight over how much I was owed back for such a delay -- 30 dollars per Day according to Charter in written format and in response to the BBB filing I made on both these companies. Midwest Movers paid 30 dollars per Business Day and made shady references to holidays and other things -- NOT AT ALL what Charter had indicated to the Better Business Bureau. I have of course claimed reimbursement from Charter and will surely get a run around that will require legal action.

The guys who delivered were of course super nice. Everything was in good condition. A few bankers boxes were broken but that's to be expected with stuff changing hands and locations over and over and over. Still, the men themselves were awesome.

The problem here is not the movers employees -- its the actual company, their rude phone customer service skills, their refusal to allow me to speak to supervisors, their curt and meaningless responses to the BBB open case inquiries (which they dismiss as "complete" as soon as they send their one-sentence reply) and not a SINGLE apology from anyone there. The customer service rep even HUNG UP ON ME on two separate occasions, and I am a polite kind person. They just didn't want to answer my questions nor help any further once it was out of their hands even though they hold ultimate responsibility.

Never use this company. Seriously. The worst company I have ever worked with in my half dozen moves, and in 40 years of dealing with service industry companies at work and personally. I've never dealt with a worse company from top to bottom.

Long-distance move from Aubrey, TX to Sebastian, FL

This is a broker only, not your moving company.

If you value your personal belongings this is NOT for YOU. Oh, there very nice when planning your move but then it goes to a unknown outfit that has no accountability. Our furniture was in storage for a period of time and that my have been a factor in how so much was damaged, stolen and treated badly, looked like the storage place had a flood, was NOT climate control as promised. Buy the time we got our belongings the manifest showed 27 boxes to be missing, movers that unloaded the truck could care less. There is a process to file a claim but its so complicated with unreasonable requirements you know there's no hope you will see any fair resolution. Find a way to use a pod so you can secure your stuff, To top it off they stole the big TV, ( packed in a TV box) yahama sound bar, dyson cordless vac etc, looks like they dug thru looking for stuff packed in original boxes..I have moved many times and no move is without some problems but this is criminal behavior.

Moving from KY to TX.

Wow. Charter van line is a brokerage
company that uses pressure and fake bids to get business. Our contract was turned over to Midwest Movers who evidently felt no obligation to follow the contract rules. I had the same experience as every other reviewer. 1. Given a price, but upon pickup told I owed $500 more. 2. Although contract says delivery between 1-21 days after notification, it was 35 days. 3. Limited contact with responsible party. 4. Had to purchase multiple items to make do in an apartment sleeping on a blow up mattress. DO NOT HIRE THIS COMPANY.

Long-distance move from Milwaukee, WI to San Francisco, CA

Broker left me at the mercy of unprofessional, extortionist movers.

This is a review of Charter Van Lines, 21301 Powerline Rd. Suite 106, Boca Raton, FL 33433. They arranged my move from Wisconsin to California, and hired Encore Moving and Storage, 202 Berg St., Algonquin, IL 60102. DO NOT USE THESE COMPANIES.

I will list a few of the worst aspects of my experience and strongly advise you not to hire this company.

1. The movers arrived a whole day after the 48-hour window that had been planned far in advance. They gave no notice at all of when they would arrive until the very last minute, despite my repeated calls.
2. I had arranged the move far in advance with the broker. We had agreed on a detailed inventory, and I asked very specific questions and received specific reassurances, in writing, as to the "binding" cost of the move. I had the dollar amount ready in a Postal Money Order as specifically instructed by the broker. But when these movers arrived, they acted as if there was no prior agreement at all, and proceeded to recalculate everything from scratch, stating that the broker "has nothing to do with this." They came on a Sunday, so there was no recourse to the broker, who was closed for the day.
3. When I tried to hold my position about the price, they repeatedly threatened to cancel the move. At one point, even after they had loaded the truck, they threatened to unpack and leave my property on the sidewalk. This is truly extortion. Like most people who are moving, the stakes were high for me because I needed to be at my destination to start a new job on a certain day. Also, my lease was up and I had to get out of my apartment on a certain day. Any change in this careful plan would come at significant expense to me, which of course they knew very well, but this is how they roll! Their message to me was: "You do it our way, you pay what we tell you, or we're leaving. We don't care about your agreement with a broker, this is what we're charging you now. Pay it, or you're on your own." Of course at this point I really did have no choice, and I had no way to evaluate their charges, though I repeat: I had been quoted a firm price based on an actually inventory, and I had been assured this price would not change. This was in a written contract. The movers simply acted as if this contract was meaningless.
4. In the end, they added almost $1300 in fraudulent charges to the "binding" price I had been given by the broker. They made it crystal clear, with their threatening and bullying tactics, that I had absolutely no choice but to pay it.
5. But that was not all. I missed 2 days of work at my new job and had to reschedule flights several times because they did not arrive when they said they would and did not provide any info about when they would arrive so it was impossible to anticipate what would happen next. And..
6. Even worse, although I had done a careful inventory with the broker -- so I know for certain we had an accurate estimate of the size of the move -- they arrived with their truck already so full that they could could not fit all my property, leaving me with no choice but to take a total loss on several items they left behind (not to mention the serious inconvenience of unexpectedly having to get rid of them when I was already 2 days behind schedule thanks to them). The total loss of property was approximately $2000 -- on top of the fraudulent "up charges."

I wrote a detailed complaint letter to the broker, and they were able to get the mover to reimburse me for one charge of $450 for "crating a grand piano." This was related to a Yamaha electronic keyboard. Besides the fact that an electronic keyboard is in no way shape or form any kind of "piano" at all, as far as moving is concerned (never mind a "grand piano"), I had carefully packed the keyboard myself, and it arrived exactly as I had packed it, with no additional "crating" of any kind. In any case, this one reimbursement took many weeks of back and forth and was only the most obviously ludicrous of the many extra costs. No one at the broker or movers ever responded to my other detailed complaints.

Avoid these two companies like the plague. There should be laws protecting consumers from this kind of fraud and abuse. Until such protection exists, we have to take care to avoid these companies and, no doubt, many others like them in an industry where taking advantage of vulnerable consumers seems to be the order of the day. (I can't tell you the number of friends and family who related similar experiences when I told them what happened to me.) Definitely if I had it to do over I would never again use a broker at all if there was any way around it. That was my mistake. If possible, make sure the company that you are making an agreement with is the same company that is actually doing the work. Otherwise, like me, you will have no way to evaluate in advance the people who are actually doing the move. Unfortunately this broker model is apparently quite common. I was suckered into it when I did an internet search and found a website offering "free moving estimate." Immediately my phone started ringing off the hook. The guy who called me from the broker (Charter Van Lines -- notice the misleading name, since they aren't doing any moving at all themselves) was so nice! But it didn't turn out that way. I hope this review will help keep you from making the same mistake.

Rude , Unprofessional, Scammers.

I have never felt the need to go online and give a bad rating until I did business with Charter Van Lines. Facts : they are not movers but actually brokers. Their business model is to give you cheapest quote and promise you their best in class moving service based on their so called 5 star rating on multiple sites. They ask you to pay a third of your quote right when you book them - a non reimbursable money !! So you would pay $1000 in advance for a move of $ 3000 BEFORE you know your actual mover. Here comes the scary part - they assign you the cheapest mover with horrible reviews online to do the move for you. And with $1000 deposit, you are left with only two choices - loose that big money or be ready for the ordeal. The attitude on my requests to provide me with a reasonable mover was - phone hung up on me!! I had to collect online reviews to convince them of poor rating of the movers assigned to me but they wouldn't care. I couldn't trust this company any further with their bad attitude when they had $1000 from me. All I could do was to cut my losses and save myself from crying after they would have had more of my money and all of my stuff. Do yourself a favor and DO NOT work with this company. The last thing you want is a bad mover when starting a new chapter in your life.

Scam artist.

If I could give zero stars I would. They hooked me by saying the could pick up on Friday and since they had a truck that needed to pick up an hour away from our new house then my belongs could be delivered on Sunday. I went ahead and booked and they said I could cancel until 7 days before my move. Well 5 days before the move they called to say that they’d subcontracted our to a different company who had awful reviews and is infamous for holding your stuff hostage for months and then overcharging. They wanted me to pay the remainder in postal money orders .. too late to cancel of course. Then the “dispatch” called at 4pm the day before they were supposed to show to tell me that now they wouldn’t come until Sunday between 10-12 bc of “delays.” Again, too late to cancel for a refund of my deposit and too late to hire a different company anyway. On Sunday the pickup window came and went with no sign of the movers. By 1:30 I started texting the driver (I had received his number on Saturday) and my husband began calling repeatedly. They kept saying they were coming. Finally three hours after the pickup window they showed. They didn’t come in a company truck but a rented Penske truck. The man promptly told me that my inventory would cost more than quoted but “wouldn’t know how much until it was loaded.” When I refused he threw out a number of $1000 extra. When I asked if my stuff would still be delivered today he said, “I don’t know. I don’t know if they’ll have me drive it up or switch drivers. Probably they’ll have me just drop it st the storage garage.” This was all so sketchy that I promptly cancelled. At this point the “dispatch boss” started to call and harass us and kept asking us “what’s your deal?” Of course charter was closed so I couldn’t call them to complain. All future emails and voicemails were left unanswered. They refused to respond to me but fought my dispute with the credit card company to get my deposit back because “they were willing to offer me a service.” Of course their offer didn’t meet the contract but apparently that didn’t matter.

+Moving.

I can only say never use Charter. Total disaster. They contracted out the mover to another company. Took 42 days to deliver from Maryland to Florida. They used the oldest scam in the moving business, "you under estimated that amount, and it will cost you more than $3200 to have us deliver your goods. If you don't pay, we will place your goods in storage and charge you storage fees." When the goods finally arrived (after I paid the scamming fee which I am now suing to get back) every single carton/box was crushed. Many items did not show up, including chairs, coffee tables, sterling silver pieces, lamps (desk and floor), many more pieces were destroyed ranging from crystal, to glass shelves in a china closet, to a king size mattress, flat screen TV to name a few. Finally, many other items were damaged, some beyond repair but maybe a few may be able to be repaired. Total damage so far is estimated to be over $10,000 dollars. If you use them, you do so at your own risk; don't say you haven't been warned.

Very helpful for a single mom!

I was hired for a new teaching job in May and would need to make a state move. I’ve hired a moving company for a shirt move, basically 20 minutes away, but it was needed since I was single at the time. This time I was moving as a single mom and needed the help, especially since I was moving from Georgia to Alabama. This would be my first time moving to another state! I was nervous about having to talk to the movers AND keep my daughter out of the way. I just knew it was going to be a disaster! Little did I know, the day would end up being awesome! The movers got there and easily picked up our things and loaded them up. They were cordial to my daughter and I. So cordial in fact, one even gave my daughter a My Little Pony coloring book to color while I helped to direct them what rooms to go to and which boxes were going in my car vs. the moving trucks. It was SO easy for me and my daughter, it made our move to Alabama a piece of cake. If I have to move again, I’ll definitely be using Charter Van Lines because of the attention to detail and the family oriented workers!

Excellent Service.

I spent weeks online looking for a moving company. As many of you know moving across the state is tough, however Charter Van Lines made the experience so much easier! Firstly the guys came in on time. Secondly, they were were very friendly and helped me disassemble my furniture and safely load it onto the moving truck within thirty minutes. Then the movers packed all my other items safely into the moving truck. When my stuff arrived at the new house I was surprised to find them in excellent condition. Nothing was scratched or broken. Choosing the right movers is a big and tough decision. I have to say that the movers from Charter Van Lines were all very efficient and professional. I am very glad I choose them.

Excellent Service, Affordable Price, Stress Free Move.

We used Charter Van Lines to move our home and business from Florida to Tennessee. Our quote was so easy to request and an answer came back really fast. We were pleasantly surprised to learn that even with a lot to move and do, their price was still really affordable.

On the big day, the movers were prompt, they were thorough, and they were careful with everything they did. They disassembled any furniture that needed it, carefully packed our flat screen TV, hand wrapped my porcelain doll collection, and gave me total confidence everything would arrive in one piece. Everything during the pack up went off without a hitch.

When they arrived at our new home, just as carefully as it went in the truck, it came out. They reassembled anything that was taken apart, and they even hung our TV for us! I recommend this company to anyone who is looking for a stress free move across state lines, and will definitely be calling them the next time we make a big move.

Great, thank you Charter Van Lines.

Me and my wife recently moved to California. Spend days searching for the best moving company and I am happy we found Charter Van Lines. They were on time and careful in handling fragile things. They made moving a seamless and stress-free experience. Workers were extremely friendly. I also want to mention the company's website, it is very well made and simple to navigate.

The best part was how cheap the move cost me. I expected it to be more, simply because I don't trust online quotes but it was very accurate and they gave me a great deal for what I needed! They’re a fantastic choice for anyone moving on a tight budget

I will definitely be recommending this company to my friends and relatives if they have a big move! Thank you Charter Van Lines.

Do not use a broker go directly to a moving company.

I recently hired Charter to handle my move from Tennessee to Indiana. I was warned about using a moving broker versus going directly to a moving company. What started on a good foot quickly turned into a nightmare. After completing a visual through estimate of my using pictures of items to be moved the estimate was off by almost 40%!! I can understand being off by 10 maybe even 15% at most but this was a case of poor estimating. Secondly, the moving company MIdWest Movers that were hired did a poor job packing items. Opening boxes I was shocked at how fragile items were "carefully packed" by the movers. Too much to go into detail for this review but I knew this would not be good when boxes clearly marked fragile were being being used to support other boxes and being tossed around during the unloading process. Needless to say I have damaged items and furniture. Again I could go on about this experience but hopefully this testimony will save you from this nightmare of a move that I encountered. After this experience there is no way I would recommend Charter to anyone. I should have listened and hired a moving company and not rely on a moving broker.

Disappointed.

Charter Van Lines is a moving broker who contracted another (awful) company for my move out of NYC. I was told one thing on the phone when booking the move, and when the movers showed up the entire opposite was true and they tried to charge me $1k more. Of course I when I emailed Luke, who scheduled my move, to tell him they need to understand how the moving companies they are contracting to ACTUALLY work and bill, I got no response. They'll say anything to get you to sign that contract and then it's all out the window. What a shame. Your deposit goes right to Charter for doing nothing and falling off the face of the earth, and then you pay another moving company on top of that. Just be aware!

Absolutely HORRIBLE! Do NOT use!

In case you haven’t read in other reviews, Charter Vanlines is a broker firm. They hire out your move to another company. In our case, they contracted our move to "Household Hauling, LLC".
When the movers arrived they immediately stated that cubic feet was going to be way over what Charter quoted and that it would increase the quoted cost as well as additional fuel charges. They started loading my belongings and then asked me to sign the new quote. In addition to the upcharge on the cubic feet, they also tried to charge $75 for the elevator, $75 for tape and $150 for a handling fee! At the end the additional fees were over $1,000! I refused to sign the new quote and explained we needed to call Charter to clarify the charges. I asked the driver to give us a few minutes to call the company, he became angry. We asked him to please leave our apartment and he became confrontational. At that time I told him to leave my house and when he didn’t (he kept talking over me) I told him to leave or I would call the police. I called Charter again and they said they talked to the movers and they said WE threatened him. Charter said that it was one word against the other and when I told them we had an audio tape of the entire confrontation they didn’t care.
Additionally, Charter told us that the drop off would be on Friday, however, what they don’t tell you, nor is it in the contract, is that Household Haulers take your furniture to a warehouse and then they have up to 21 days to deliver it!! We told the initial salesperson, Dan, that we needed the furniture to be delivered on Friday and it was never told to us that this was not going to be case. Household Haulers also first told me that the handling fee was for storage, even though you don’t want it AND that in the contract it says 30 days free storage! When the driver finally left my home, and I was talking to Charter, the driver called his company and told them they were going to unload the truck as they were refusing the delivery, which by this time I was just as glad! I called Charter again to dispute the down payment and all the supervisor would offer was to reschedule the delivery with another agency! Are you kidding me?? After being scammed, threatened and treated the way we were, they think I am going to let them take my belongings?
Household Haulers showed up in a rented Penske truck, they tried to add additional fees that were to be included and the drivers were verbally abusive! Charter Van Lines did absolutely nothing to help resolve this! Household Haulers did not move our belongings and I will NEVER recommend Charter Van Lines to anyone!

Don’t use them!!

They do NOT tell you they subcontract your move to some fly by night moving company.
They make you pay thousands upfront to them over the phone as a deposit.
The movers insist you pay cash up front before they will load or unload your belongings. The actual cost is much more than quoted.
They deliver your items weeks after you arrive at your new destination so make sure you bring at least a weeks worth of clothing and everything else you need to function in the meantime.
The moving truck was dirty and so were the blankets. The dirt got into everything. Items were broken and damaged but the amount they will pay is .60 cents on the pound.
The WORST moving experience ever.
