Long-distance move from Chicago, IL to New York, NY

Warning – do Not Use United Movers Group.

They are the most unprofessional company I have ever dealt with and have absolutely no customer service, all the way from their impossible to contact and insincere customer service hotline (which is never answered, and leaves no options to leave a message), to their dishonest dispatch team (Jeremy ext 555) and their fraudulent and deceitful managerial staff (Walter ext 404). ON AT LEAST 3 OCCASIONS MY SCHEDULED MOVE FROM CHICAGO TO NY (Job No U7981439) TIME WAS NOT PERFORMED AND I WAS NEVER EVEN ONCE NOTIFIED BY UNITED MOVERS GROUP THAT IT WOULD NOT OCCUR (as such I was left waiting the whole day at the apartment, missing 3 separate days of work) or when a new time would be scheduled. It reached the stage that on the day my rental agreement terminated and only 5 hours before my flight out interstate (several days after my scheduled move date), I still had not heard back from United Movers Group as to when the removalists would arrive after multiple cancellations. I had to use another moving company at very short notice (the day my lease ended) and United Movers Group refused to refund my deposit. The manager Walter did not even offer an apology for their terrible performance and actually took pride in the fact that they were not going to refund a deposit for services not rendered.

Don’t be fooled by their sales team and the various underhand tricks they employ to get your service such as
- Making baseless criticisms of rival moving companies
- Referring you to their number of miles on the DOT website or their BBB rating

Read the fine print of any contract. THEY CLAIM THEY CAN PICK UP YOUR FURNITURE AT ANY TIME IN A 6 DAY WINDOW WITH NO NOTICE WHATSOEVER, FROM 2 DAYS BEFORE YOUR SCHEDULED MOVE, TO 2 DAYS AFTER YOUR RESERVE DAY. THEY WILL NOT GIVE YOU NOTICE, DO NOT CARE HOW MANY DAYS OF WORK YOU MISS AND DO NOT APPRECIATE THAT FREIGHT ELEVATORS NEED TO BE BOOKED IN ADVANCE. THEY CLAIM THAT THEY ARE LEGALLY COVERED IF THEY COME AT ANY TIME IN THIS 6 DAY BLOCK (REGARDLESS OF NUMBER OF CANCELLATIONS) AND WILL NOT GIVE YOU PRIOR NOTICE.

BEFORE YOU EVEN CONSIDER USING UNITED MOVERS I SUGGEST YOU JUST TRY TO GET THROUGH TO THEIR CUSTOMER SERVICE LINE OR ASK TO SPEAK TO THEIR DISPATCH OR MANAGERIAL TEAM (RATHER THAN THE SALES TEAM LINE), OR SEND AN EMAIL AND SEE IF YOU GET A RESPONSE, TO SEE WHAT YOU ARE IN FOR.

When I started encountering problems with United Movers I decided to google maps their listed address, which showed what appeared to be a suburban street and residential apartment.

United Movers Group customer service, dispatch team and managers are impossible to contact, provide no communication at all regarding planned moves and never contacted me to inform when a planned move time / date was cancelled. Each time I had to ring United Movers Group to try and chase up what had happened and why a scheduled move had not occurred and when it would be rescheduled.

In more detail, my experience with United Movers Group is as follows (please read as it outlines the utter incompetence and blatant disregard for the customer that charactereises United Movers Group)

- Their sales team (James ext 406) made all these promises regarding the reputation and reliability of United Movers Group, even going so far as to make groundless criticisms and accusations about rival companies in an attempt to secure my business
- However, as soon as I paid the deposit (6 weeks before planned move), I became aware of the huge difference between the accessibility of their sales team and the promises they make in attempting to secure business and the reality of United Movers Group customer service department
- It is impossible to get through to United Movers Group customer service department. I would often ring 10-15 times only to get no response, with no option to leave a message and request a call back. The only way I ever ended up getting put through to United Movers customer service department was when I rang the sales department and complained, so was put through to a representative who inevitably was uninformed and unable to provide me with any useful information. Even doing simple things like trying to inform United Movers of my freight elevator booking was an impossible task
- At least a week prior to my move, I eventually spoke to a customer service representative, informed them clearly that in my apartment complex there is only 1 freight elevator and time slots need to be booked well in advance, and gave them my freight elevator time booking. I also informed them that I would like to bring my move forward and that I could schedule a move as early as Thurs 22nd June. I also mentioned that I would be flying out interstate on Tues 6/27/17 night. They assured me that they had noted all of the information I provided and the move would proceed smoothly as planned
- I did not receive any call from United Movers confirming the exact move time so I finally got through to a representative on Saturday 24th June (my re-scheduled reserve day) and was informed that the move would occur on Sunday 25th June between 11am-2pm.
- I then waited the entire day at my apartment on Sunday 25th June but the driver never came. I never received a call from the driver or any other United Movers Group representative that the move would not occur. I must have rung the company number more than 30 times that day but never got a response as I later found out they have no representatives answering the phones on Sunday despite the fact that United Movers reportedly performs moves on the day. As I was not given the number of the driver, I was completely unware of whether the move would occur or not, whether it was delayed or when it would be re-scheduled.
- The following day, Monday 26th June, it was up to me to chase up United Movers to find out what was going on. As I was informed the move would occur on Sunday, I had patients booked for that morning in my hospital clinic that I had to cancel at short notice. After multiple attempts, I finally got through to the United Movers Group customer service team who initially were extremely unhelpful and unable to provide me with any useful information about when the move would occur. After further complaints stressing the fact that my lease was imminently going to expire and I had a flight booked interstate the following day, I was put through to Jeremy ext 555 in dispatch who assured me that the move would occur Mon26th June evening 6-8pm. I complained that this was likely too late and that if the move did not occur, the same thing would occur where I would be unable to contact customer service and seek clarification as to whether the move would proceed and when it would be re-scheduled. He assured me that I would be contacted and provided me with his extension 555 and told me that I would be contacted by him or the driver if there were any issues. I asked for the driver’s number just in case but they would not provide it. He said he would be working late (till 9pm and could be contacted on ext 555 at any time) and said he would serve as my point contact.
- The manager then called me (Walter ext 404) and assured me that if the move did not occur on Monday 26th June 6-8pm it would occur first thing the following morning Tuesday 27th June 8am. I thus tried at very short notice to book my apartment complex freight elevator. This was at the peak time for moves and the freight elevator was largely booked out. I had to negotiate to have the freight elevator slots re-scheduled for me.
- I then contacted United Movers at around 5pm on Monday 26th June to confirm when the move would occur. There was no response on the customer service line. I rang Jeremy ext 555 (he told me he would be working late and contactable) - but got no response. I left multiple messages for him. I then tried to ring Walter (ext 404) and still had no answer- I left several messages for him as well. I must have called at least 20 times a combination of the customer service line, Jeremy and Walter without a response. I then rang the sales team as they were the only ones answering the phone. I was put on hold for over 10 minutes and then disconnected. When I tried to ring the sales number again I was hung up on.
- Needless to say, the move did not end up proceeding on Monday 26th June.
- My tenant end date was Tuesday 27th June and I was flying out to New York that night
- I then got up early and cancelled my morning clinic on Tuesday 27th June expecting the United Movers to come at 8am that morning as advised by Walter if the move was unable to occur on Monday. Once again, I rang several times in the morning but got no response. The rescheduled (for the third time) move out time of Tuesday 27th June 8am did not occur, and again no-one from the company called me to inform that it was not proceeding.
- By this stage I urgently called United Movers (Walter, Jeremy, customer service) and after multiple attempts finally got put through to customer service. After a long hold, they then told me the move was re-scheduled for 12-2pm on Tuesday 27th June. However, the freight elevator was already booked for that time (United Movers Group has a ridiculous expectation that they can just organise times at no notice and elevators will be available during peak moving season). In fact, the freight elevator was completely booked out for the rest of the day and I was scheduled to end my lease and fly out that night. I pleaded with my apartment complex and they told me that they would move people around and open up a slot from 4-6pm on Tuesday 27th June (mere hours before my flight out).
- I rang United Movers back and informed them that the only slot available for Tuesday 27th June was 4-6pm. The company representative said they were unsure whether they would be able to proceed and would get back to me within 20-30 minutes as to whether I could be accommodated. I stressed to the representative that if I didn’t hear from him in 30 minutes I would presume the move would not be occurring / cancelled and would try and organise a move at very late notice with any other company possible. Needless to say, after over an hour, I still had not received a call from United Movers. I tried to ring back to confirm whether the move would proceed or not and then to cancel the move but got no response and there was no option to even leave a voice message on their customer service line. Given the extraordinary unreliability of United Movers and a complete lack of communication, I had no option but to try and organise a move with another company as I had 3 failed attempted moves with United Movers (all of which were cancelled without any notice given to me, and each of which I then had to call and chase up to reschedule a move, which then got cancelled again), was flying out that evening, and was still awaiting confirmation whether or not they would be able to perform my move that afternoon.
- Thus, at very short notice (< 6 hours), I organised a move with a rival company who were able to fit me in. They gave me the number of the driver so I was able to communicate with them as to exactly when they would arrive. Due to the extremely short notice of my booking, the end cost of my move was significantly greater than quotes I was obtaining when I rang to initially organise my move 5 weeks ago.
- I then get a call from a United Movers driver 20 minutes before my freight elevator booking (3:38pm) saying they were finishing up another job and would be on their way. By this stage the other company had already arrived and started disassembly. I told the United Movers driver that I tried to call them several times earlier that day to confirm the move without answer and then to cancel the move, again without answer.
- In the end, my apartment was cleared mere hours before my flight out, and I had to rush my apartment check out and go straight to the airport.

As you can see from my detailed description above, my experience with United movers has been nothing short of horrific. United Movers customer service and dispatch team are atrocious with a total disregard for basic courtesy. I understand that sometimes things can occur that may mean that a move is delayed or postponed but I at least expect to be notified about it, rather than just left waiting and wondering without any notification and unable to contact anyone from United Movers to see what was occurring. On at least 3 times, moves were cancelled without notice / communication and without United Movers contacting me to re-schedule (I always had to ring to chase up, only then to be re-cancelled again without notice). I had to cancel patient clinics at my hospital on 2 consecutive days because of this lack of notification from United Movers, only for the re-scheduled moves to still not occur. I then had to organise a move at essentially no notice with another company at increased expense. At no stage did United Movers apologise for the extreme inconvenience caused.

I really should have asked United Movers to not only refund my deposit ($955) but also reimburse the extra cost I have incurred as a result of organising a move at very late notice with a different company. However, I wanted to put this terrible experience behind me so I simply requested that my deposit of $955 be refunded. However after several hours wasted trying to get through to customer service then on the phone with various team mambers, I was then put through to the manager Walter again. He stonewalled, accepted no responsibility and made no apology and refused to refund the deposit, gloating that they are not legally obligated to do so. While most mangers try to constructively respond to valid criticisms of their company’s poor performance he seemed to be proud of them, so it is unlikely that there would be any improvement in their future performance.

SO PLEASE, IF YOU WANT A RELIABLE MOVE WITH AN HONEST COMPANY, SAVE YOURSELF A LOT OF TIME, ENERGY, WASTED CALLS AND MONEY AND DO NOT USE UNITED MOVERS.

Long-distance move from Arkansas to Florida

They exceeded my expectations.

I have to admit I was very nervous about choosing any moving company to do my move. My brother moved last year and had a company change prices and trucks three different times. He paid a fortune for broken items and I couldn't let that happen to me because I have all antique furniture. I needed to be closer to family I couldn't live by myself anymore. My brother gave me all the info and resources so I wouldn't fall victim to a moving scam. United Movers Group passed all of the tests. They were not the cheapest but I didn't want to go with the cheapest. I did the full packing option so all I had to do was open the door. It turned out I had more boxes than estimated but it wasn't any additional money because I didn't break the space they gave me. I also went for the unpacking service and they were like my tan interior decorators. They exceeded my expectations and brought me closer to my loved ones.

Long-distance move from Hartford, CT to Dallas, TX

The 1 Call For My Relocation I'm Glad I actually took!

I have used professional moving services 4 times within the past 5 years due to my line of work. I always thought I did my homework correctly and thoroughly, but was left disappointed, over charged, and flat out LIED TO each time..in one way or another. So when this last move exceeded my expectations and went smooth, I told my relocation associate, Luke Daniels, that I would write a review, which was the only thing he asked of me when it went just as he explained it would. Honestly, I was preparing myself for the typical nonsense I've experienced in this moving industry with everyone else, but I must say..from explaining each detail of the job to handling my ever changing inventory list and displaying the utmost patience and professionalism, Luke and his team at United did exactly what they said they would. As a business woman, I can't express how much I appreciate that. Considering it was somewhat of a last minute move, they arrived when they said they would, and actually delivered my items 2 days early! (the previous company delivered my stuff, some of which was damaged only 2 and a half WEEKS after when they said they would!!) My time is valuable, and I sincerely thank United for not wasting it, and being straight shooters from the very start. I wish I knew about this company years ago, it would of prevented my stress level from rising and changed my thoughts on this shady industry! But, there are some sincere, good movers out there, and for that, I thank you Luke & United Movers Group! =) From the initial conversation with Luke, to their efficient dispatch team, to the men doing the labor..I can not express how impressed I was with the entire process! I know time is money, but Luke was never too busy to spend the time addressing any issues or questions I had with the utmost patience and honesty. He really explained things to where there were zero surprises from the time I was loaded onto their truck, to the time of delivery. By far the most transparent and professional person I have come across throughout numerous moves I've gone through. I will def. be using your services again when I have my next move (which hopefully won't be for awhile) but I'm glad I now know who to call when the time does come. Thanks again guys!

Long-distance move from Pennsylvania to California

Seamless move great service.

I stumbled across united movers group while looking for a company to move me from Philadelphia to California, I was pleasantly surprised when I got in contact with my booking agent who answered every single question imaginable and who took a lot of time to make me feel safe and secure. When the crew showed up they were personable and professional. I had originally planned on this taking all day to load my household belongings it took four hours, and the space that I took up on the truck was much less than what the sales representative quoted me. Upon arrival to California they unloaded the truck and put everything together. I would highly recommend united movers group to any of my friends or family.

Long-distance move from Colorado to Florida

Goood Movers.

This was my first move cross country I thought it was going to be really easy I signed up online to receive quotes and my phone was ringing like I owed everyone in America money. The companies all sounded really good on the phone but after researching some of them like United movers group and for me to do my due diligence I was actually really scared it even made me weary of United movers group. But after seeing the reviews and that they owned and operated their own trucks on the Department of Transportation's website I was very comfortable going with them. The movers came out of the day of the move and I actually brought a few less items on the trip so my price did go down based off of the cubic foot this is so much more hopeful to go off of cubic foot then wait it actually made sense to me. They wrapped up the furniture very nice and the glass doors on my entertainment center when they delivered my furniture they unwrapped it rebuilt the furniture and placed everything and all the boxes in the right rooms for me it was such a help fry the bed back. Thanks a lot you know the movers group.

Long-distance move from Seattle, WA to Pittsburgh, PA

Nightmare.

In all honesty, I can't give this company more than one star. My move from Seattle to Pittsburgh was nothing but one nightmare after another. They were 3 days late picking up my goods and I was informed that the delivery date would be between 12 to 21 days, maximum. It took 7 weeks (52 days). After numerous calls to the Florida office (talking to a different person each time) and getting no results, I was able to contact the driver on March 14 (20 days into my move) and was told by him that the truck slid into a ditch to avoid an accident in Utah on March 7 and they were trying to get the truck back on the road.On March 20, I was advised by a company representative that the truck was in Iowa and would be in Pittsburgh by March 23/24 and if it didn't show up I was to call back. It never showed up, I called, and was told that the truck was in Iowa and on its way. I was finally told by the dispatching supervisor in Florida that I was calling too much and he was considering it harassment. I called again on March 29 and was informed that the truck was having computer problems and that the engine kept shutting off. It was now in Gary, Indiana.I then starting calling the person who originally picked up my furniture in Seattle. He would not answer his phone, had no voice mail, and would only answer me through texts when I pleaded with him. On April 12 I received the phone number of the "new" driver and started communication with him. He answered his phone and used texts also. He guaranteed to be in Pittsburgh by April 15. He was there and he delivered all my furniture when he said he would. He does not work for United Movers Group. When I talked with him he told me he picked up my goods in California on April 10/11 and drove straight to Pittsburgh, ariving April 15. In my opinion, this explains why the United Movers Group gave me so many different explanations. This company never calls you when they say they would, they never follow through on anything they say and they definitly have no empathy for the customer. Also, imagine paying for food and lodging (which is approximately $100 per day) for 52 days ($5200) instead of 21 days ($2100). To add to my frustration, my wife's cremated remains were on that truck and, in my opinion, they showed no compassion for the stress and anxiety I was going through. The only reason I am giving them one star is because they did reduce my final bill by $300. Please do not use United Movers Group. They have offices in Aventura, FL and Niles, IL.

Long-distance move from New Jersey to Illinois

Exceptional Move- Outstanding Service.

I have moved 5 times in the past. The moving experiences have always been bad to a nightmare. I have had movers not show up, things missing and prices jump up at the end. United Movers Group was my first move that went smoothly and was a wonderful experience. They were wonderful to work with Eric who coordinated my move, to the drivers and crew who packed me up. I was so nervous to move yet again due to the past and they made this move a piece of cake. Also for the kicker they took money OFF at the end. I will NEVER use another company thank you United Movers you guys are the best.

Long-distance move from California to Florida

Made a bad situation good.

I had to leave Cali because rent was just too high in my hometown. Leaving California was one thing I never thought I'd do. My mom lives in Florida and she said I could live with her. She recommended the company that moved her down here which was this one. I told them my mom moved with them a few years ago and gave me a repeat customer discount. I didn't have much stuff so the estimate was over the phone. They told me a price and it was cheaper than driving a uhaul. I had to go with them and they did everything they said they would.

Long-distance move from Pittsburgh, PA to Boca Raton, FL

So thankful for united movers group.

I recently moved from Pittsburgh Pennsylvania to Boca Raton Florida. My mother had already made the move down here and used united movers group and was thoroughly pleased. I was apprehensive about using a professional moving company as I've heard nothing but horror stories when It comes to these moves, Reluctantly I called United movers group and was so pleasantly surprised with The incredible customer service I received. I know I'm a lot to deal with I called every day to make sure that everything was going to go smoothly. Upon pick up the crew that showed up in a united movers Group truck loaded so carefully and so diligently. And to my surprise the cubic footage was considerably less than what I was quoted. Moving is such a stressful time and life and I am so thankful that United movers group handled everyone of my concerns, answered every single one of my questions, and always stayed in correspondence with me. I will always recommend this company to anyone looking for a quality move at a fair price. They have restored my faith and long-distance moves, and have made this such a hassle free move I will be forever grateful. Thank you so much united movers group for all your help.

Long-distance move from Aurora, CO to Baltimore, MD

Hiring them was a huge mistake.

This was one of the worst experiences I've ever had with any company, and I wish I was exaggerating.
I was lured in by the mostly good reviews, the low quote, and the ease with which I was able to contact my rep, Eric. Things started going downhill after they received the deposit.
I was told that my things would be picked up from Colorado May 26-27, with 24 hours notice before the exact date. Instead, about 8:15am on May 26, the driver called and said they were on their way, and they arrived a half hour later, while I was still frantically taping shut boxes that I had assumed would be taken the following day.
The quote was based on a "very generous" cubic footage estimate of my furniture, told over the phone. This was wildly under-estimated, and I had to leave behind a bookcase and chair because I had already far exceeded the footage estimate. Luckily the driver abided by the binding contract, and that's the one decent thing that happened.
My things were supposed to be delivered to Maryland on June 2, approximately. I knew it could be a couple days later and was fine with that. I called on June 1 to get an idea of where the driver was so I could plan for taking off work. Turns out my stuff had not even left yet, almost a week after pick-up. We called and emailed literally dozens of times, multiple people, morning to night, over three days just to figure out why my stuff hadn't left. Turns out they never collected the second payment, because they wouldn't answer our multiple calls/emails *trying* to pay them. My rep, Eric, initially gave us a different number in the customer service department to call instead of him, and soon just stopped answering the phone when that number didn't work. We would see that our emails were marked "read" but still ignored. We were put on hold and then hung up on multiple times. If we finally made it through to a person, they wouldn't have any idea what was going on with our account and would tell us to call someone else, or if they were really invested in their jobs, actually transfer us to someone else, who would typically not answer.
We finally got the payment information for a shady-sounding marketing company that a call to their sales department confirmed was, for some reason, the correct company to pay. (However, the salesman was also surprised by this, as he had to ask someone else for me, since it sounded so weird.) For the record, the sales department is (unsurprisingly) the only department that we got good, reliable service from. Luckily, they gave us an alternative to just scan a check and pay the amount in full, which we did, and my stuff finally left.
It arrived 15 days after it was originally picked up. Luckily I had 24 hours notice this time, but the driver was still 1.5 hours late beyond the 4-hr window that he gave. I understood why (movers never showed up to help him at his previous job), but it was just one more thing on top of everything else. (I still tipped the actual movers well both at pickup and delivery, since they were locals and weren't responsible for United Movers Group's total ineptitude.) With that said, I still had to pay an extra $300 for a "shuttle" truck, because apparently the wide, quiet boulevard in front of my apartment couldn't fit the actual moving truck (although it'd fit in my cramped apartment parking lot just fine back in Colorado).
I had brought along enough clothes/essentials with me in case the movers were 3 days late, which was originally my worst-case scenario. Instead, I spent the first week at my new job sleeping on an air mattress, using only the absolute bare essentials I'd brought with me on the plane.
I've included so much detail in this review because I believe I was swayed by fake good reviews, some which said that the bad reviews were the fake ones. I originally thought I was making a better decision, stress- and time-wise, by hiring movers instead of doing everything myself. Instead I spent more money replacing the furniture that they couldn't take, paying for a shuttle truck, paying hundreds of dollars in tips on both ends (something I hadn't thought about), and paying for new clothes, food, dishes, and cookware that I needed and didn't think I'd be without for so long.
My family, friends, and coworkers regularly asked about my move during this whole mess, and are well-versed in how completely incompetent and useless this company is. They're still in business because they make sure to lock you in with a good salesman and a deposit, and I've never been so stunned by the jarring 180 in customer service that happens after they receive that deposit. I can't recommend this company to anyone, simply because I don't hate anyone that much.
