Long-distance move from Foster City, CA to Pineville, NC

All Smoke and Mirrors,

We needed a moving company to move our 750 sq ft 1 bed room 1 bath apartment from SF to NC. We were greeted by Sean with a very enthusiastic, professional manner he gave the spiel that everyone wants to hear " no hassle". The pricing was right on the money. And the reputation of the company made us feel at ease.We left a deposit with our CC and made sure several times that, that same credit could be used at time of pick up. Sean recorded all large furniture and items that were to be taken. He also wanted a box count (we had not yet finished boxing items) so we gave him large box count to begin. This was all smoke and mirrors. They contracted out to a 1 star company. The day of the big pick up, Essential Moving Company no longer accepted credit cards but wanted a Zelle payment through friends and family ( big red flag) there was little to no communication only that our 750 sq ft is now 2000 sq ft. And there was a SIGNIFICANT increase in the price quoted. Not to mention Sean had incorrectly entered bed sizes. We called New Leaf and they seemed very uninterested in to the point they blocked my husbands number and only answered when I called from my phone. Essential moving company would not load the truck until either we used a cashiers check or Zelle super sketch system. 3 Hours later and a trip to the bank (no hassle right?) they loaded the truck. We ended up finding out mid trip to NC that our things were still in CA. Fast Forward we are in NC and our things were delivered. We were told that they would break down furniture and it would be rebuilt upon delivery. Well we have a king size bed frame with pieces that were not attached and a handful of screws and washers that didn’t end up on the frame and NO MATTRESS. We called to find out that it was still in CA and our dining room table is also MISSING. Some Boxes that were labeled Fragile are dented in and look outwardly damaged We called Essential Moving and were helped by a less then helpful gentleman that seemed frustrated. He angry told us to call tomorrow when we tried to enquire when the “next truck” was leaving CA. This process has been far from “no hassle”. I DO NOT recommend these companies for ANY moving needs. They don’t care.

Long-distance move from Irvine, CA to Alpharetta, GA

Scam - Do not Use

We have had the most horrific experience with this moving company - DO NOT USE THEM. This is a long review but please read and don’t go through what we have had to endure.

Here is a recap of what happened to us:

We went through our whole inventory list with the New Leaf Moving rep, Brandon Young. After going through all of our belongings with him, he advised us that we would need 452 cf of space for our move from CA to GA. This would accommodate 60 boxes and all of our furniture (king size bed, frame, 4 nightstands, 1 dresser & 2 artificial plants).

The quote for this amount of space was $3100. On the contract we signed you can see the dimensions of the boxes we planned to take, as well as the listed furniture.

Furthermore, Brandon Young reassured us that we were making the right decision going with New Leaf Moving, saying that the moving industry is rife with corrupt and unscrupulous scammers. He then touted that New Leaf Moving is an excellent, trustworthy moving company that was started by two gentleman who have been in the industry for years.

When the movers arrived, much to our surprise, it was not New Leaf that arrived but a different moving company called New Future Moving. It turns out New Leaf is a broker, not a mover; something we were never told, and didn’t find in any of the research we did on them. The rude foreman then proceeded to look over our stuff, and quote us $5700 on top of the $1200 we had already paid as a deposit to New Leaf Moving. This brought our total to $6,900, not $3,100 as Brandon had originally said.

We were livid because aside from the 2-4 additional boxes we had, we had adhered strictly to the original terms in our contract. After much arguing, we called New Leaf Moving to try to talk to our rep Brandon Young. We were never allowed to talk to him and instead we got connected to their customer service rep., Nicole, who reassured us that this $5,700 quote was just a worst case estimate and a way for the movers to protect themselves. At this point, our entire move was already in place: we were set to drive cross country the next morning and had our new jobs waiting for us in GA. So we had no other choice but to trust their judgment and reluctantly agreed with the hope that everything would fit.

When the movers finished, they had left a significant portion our belongings behind saying that we had already filled up our allotted 452 cubic feet of space. So at this point the only thing that was packed were our boxes - none of our furniture were loaded, which was included in the original quote. We were now left with the unsavory predicament of deciding where we had to cut our losses and decide what we absolutely needed. We asked for them to add on the bed + frame and 3 additional boxes. This added another $2400 to the move. Again, for something that was previously established to be included in the original contract

After this incredibly horrible experience, we looked up New Future Moving online to find almost no reviews except for two 1-star ratings on Yelp (with 1 review giving a very worrisome and similar experience as ours). We were never told by New Leaf Moving that this would be the movers they were sending us. Undoubtedly, they knew we would have never signed a contract if we knew these were the people that would be handling our move.

When the movers arrived in GA with our belongings they were in an 18 wheeler truck and said they couldn’t make it to the front of our apartment. They said they could get the truck to our apartment but they wouldn’t be able to back it out, so we had two options: 1) Pay an additional $2k for them to bring our belongings into our apartment, because it would require long carry. 2) Or we could rent our own UHaul, unload our items from their truck, and then move the belongings in ourselves. This was another huge charge in a long line of unforeseen additional charges, and yet another example of us not receiving the services we originally paid for. We ended up renting a UHaul and brought our belongings in ourselves. In addition, we have multiple missing and damaged items from the move.

After much back and forth with New Leaf Moving, they connected us with New Future Moving, and said New Future would pay us a settlement of $899.25 if we didn’t post any bad reviews or pursue litigation. We signed an agreement, and were told that in 21 business days we would receive our compensation of $899.25.

We signed that agreement on 3/10/22. As of today it has been 97 business days and we have received nothing. New Future Moving now appears to have gone out of business and is not responding to us, and New Leaf Moving has stopped responding to us and is washing their hands of any responsibility.

This whole setup is a scam, and made the already stressful experience of moving cross country 10 x more stressful and expensive. Please do not go through what we went through and do not use New Leaf Moving for your move.

Long-distance move from Henderson, NV to Charleston, SC

THIS COMPANY IS A SCAM DO NOT USE THEM.

DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY IT IS A SCAM. I have never been more upset or frustrated. I was quoted $9,400 for my move and was promised repetitively that that amount was a “no not exceed” amount and told my move would most likely cost less.

Then a week before my move I was told I had to pay an additional $1000 to receive my items within a 3 day window, otherwise it would up to 30 days!

To make matters even worse, when the movers showed up they told me that absolutely could not do my move for $9,400. They said New Leaf WAY under quoted me and it would be $14,000! They knew at that point I was stuck and desperate and needed my items moved. I called New Lead multiple times that day in hysterics and they either didn’t answer or did nothing. As I said ABSOLUTELY A SCAM!!! We have reported them to the better business bureau as well. awful and makes something stressful like moving even worse.

Long-distance move from New Haven, CT to Baltimore, MD

Bait and Switch

Do not contract with New Leaf. They underestimate on inventory, no matter how well you describe belongings. I gave specific measurements, yet the estimated cost moved from 3600 to what would have been 5500, but I was fortunate to be able to move some furniture by later renting a u-haul. They did not pick up or deliver on the agreed upon dates. They didn’t have tools or the manpower on pick-up, my husband did the breakdown and helped load. The lead complained the entire time and was a bully. I’ll be making a claim to BBB and the Florida and local legislature.

Horrible Company

I hired this company, and it now been a month and a half with out any of my things. They contracted out to a 1 star company that had a fail rating on better business bureau company. I have left multiple messages with no help whatso ever and they will no longer reply to us. I still have no idea when I will get my things and they have been no help in getting any updates. Never use them since they think its ok to hire a company that is known for up charging, loosing items or breaking they things they move.

My move

All of my WORST FEARS were realized the day our stuff was getting picked up. We got a quote that was in line with what a cross country move should cost. We decided to proceed after a phone conversation with Jake. They assured me that the price would not change and that our stuff would be on one truck. All that changed the day the movers showed up. They showed up 4 hours late. Within 30 minutes the quote went up $4,500. We agreed, but then they wanted a deposit for $4,800 more than what we agreed to and another $8,000 once our items were delivered. Within a couple of hours our moving quote doubled. I got on the phone with Danielle and explained what was going on and you get the typical, "this is what you agreed to" or "this is the contract". The contract is misleading with how they put the numbers in. They quote the price of the move, but don't take into account the deposit. They tell you the price of the move is $12,500, the deposit is $5,300 and they make you think the remaining balance is $7,200. The scam is that the total price is $12,500 plus the $5,300 for a total of $17,800. They underestimate your total square footage and then raise the price once they get there. We tried getting our deposit back based on what occurred, but we got the typical "did you read the contract" and "we had to pay the guys to show up". I kept pushing that they should do the right thing, but Kristen had no interest in helping. I hope that my review can help at least one person avoid having to go through what my wife and I went through. If you would like your WORST FEARS to be realized when dealing with a cross country move then New Leaf Moving would be your company.

Long-distance move from Warren, MI to Nacogdoches, TX

Find a company that will back up there agreement

To start with the price your quoted will almost double. Our move was 1170 miles . It had set back after set back . First of all the pulled up at out home doubled the price and had a 26ft. Truck partially loaded. We completely filled a 26 ft truck.

Second of all they aresubcontractors.. and my belongings went to Chicago from Michigan where they stated it would be sent on a 52 ft. Truck and the second company stated they had 14 days to deliver per there contract. They did better that but it should up on a 26 ft. Truck .I would have loved to see the stuff packed the door closed and the same Truck show at our new home for security reasons. Then the driver canceled the first date came the next day to deliver. He was also the only mover and put jotting together and had no help with a very pricey move. No matter how many times I have called or EMailed John who assured me they are very professional it has been over 4 weeks and it goes un replied and no resolutions .I asked for a credit because we paid up front and nothing was done to place our furnishings or put them back together. Chose wisely when picking a company. This is not the one for you. My next move is the better business bureau.

Long-distance move from Morgantown, WV to East Haven, CT

Very Unprofessional and Horrible service

The service is very bad. When they called me first the agent was very friendly and he assured me that they will come pack everything and I don't have worry about anything. Later I was told they didn't quote for the packing and that caused price bump and the estimated volume is almost half of what is needed. So overall I paid almost twice than the original estimate.

Even after paying $800 for packing, none of the boxes were labelled. And I am missing screws for my bed, table and not sure if I am missing anything else as I need to unpack the boxes yet. I asked them to label the boxes but nothing was labeled and when they came to deliver stuff they kept asking me where boxes will go as if I have xray vision to see what is in the box. The whole idea was for them pack everything and have them unpack and get me situated. However, right now I have my bedroom and kitchen stuff in garage.

And table unscrewed and lying on the floor. It is chaos. Not what I was expecting

Was very difficult to confirm delivery date, poor communication between the newleaf group and career (ENVG van lines) who came to pick up services.

The amount paid was not properly updated between the carrier and office. They only accept cash, certified check or cash app. But they don't give correct amount till they are at the house, not sure how we are supposed to carry that amount of cash or get the certified check without the information.

I had trouble each and every step of the process. Really very disappointed and please stay away from this company.

Long-distance move from Bonsall, CA to Cordova, TN

Shakedown

Believe all of the low star reviews. New Leaf is a broker, not an actual moving company. This makes a huge difference.

I setup a cross country move March 2022 to be handled in June. I went through everything that I had. The person I spoke to, Mike, was nice and personable and gave me a great deal, according to him, and h mad eye feel very comfortable with everything. I was quoted a great price compared to everywhere else I looked. We went room by room and I told him what I had. I later needed to move the date and that was easily accommodated.

When pickup time was a couple of days away a person called, JJ, and asked if anything had changed. I told him no, because I had not sold or bought anything and nothing changed from when I talked to mike in March. The movers came and after walkthrough I was told I had a lot more than they had space for, I was quoted at 697 cuft but I had around 1400. He said I would have to pay an additional $4,100. I told him that I did not have a contract with him and that I will call New Leaf. I called twice. They were closed for the day. I left a message. I told the movers that I would not be moving at that moment if they did not have the space and required an additional $4,100. They left. New Leaf rep, Nicole, called and was very nice. She said that it sounded a bit high for a 2bd place that did not even have a full furnished second bedroom. She said she would call and see what she could do. She called back and stated that it would be more, but she did not think it would be as much as that. Quality assurance would give me a call at 9am next morning. One the movers, they were a few young guys that didn't give me the impression that they had done this too many times, but on that I could be wrong.

Next morning I called them because QA had not called by 9:15am. I was told that I would get a call shortly, they were assisting other customers. JJ called around 9:30 and his tone was argumentative to start with. He constantly talked over me and showed no empathy or even understanding whatsoever. Insisted that I refused the pickup and my deposit could not be refunded even when their contract says not to move forward if more money is requested at pickup without calling them. I called them and they were closed. If it wasn't for the fact that I was in a time crunch and did not want to lose my $2k deposit I would have just went with someone else.

We then went through each room and simple things that should have been accounted for were not. When I said I have a queen bed with a movable base you would think that included the headboard and footboard, apparently not! He also said that when I said a dresser and mirror I should have been specific that they are two separate things. It was absolutely ridiculous. I went through everything in every room. Total went from $5600 to $12,600. The price, I found from checking with other companies before continuing with them, was not much different than what others were quoting, but the issue is that I should have known this in March. Coming up with an additional $6525 in one day is not feasible for everyone. It truly felt like a shakedown and they did not care in the slightest.

Do yourself a favor and find a reputable mover that actually does the move and will do an in person walk through to ensure your move quote is accurate, not a greedy broker like New Leaf Moving Group that quotes you one price and then tells you its your fault it more than doubles because their person was not on their job.

Long-distance move from Philadelphia, PA to Naples, FL

Deceitful scammers.

This company is an absolute scam. They do not make it known at all they are brokers. Their practices are deceiving! I never moved before & was told by them they aren’t the company moving my belongings. They took a deposit & sent me a contract which they called immediately after sending it & pressured me to sign right away or I would lose the price quote they gave me. They hire unknown movers to do the move & once they do they wash their hands of everything because when the movers they hire show up, if the even do, they make you sign a new contract & charge you way more! This company scams people & has worked the system so that they are able to get away with it. They would not refund me when I told them I was no comfortable with going forward after discovering all their red flags. It’s unbelievable. These people should be in jail.
