Dumbo Moving and Storage

This company doesn’t deserve any stars, they should never be utilized for a move. Movers were completely unprofessional and had NO idea what they were doing, as if this was their first move job. They demanded a 25% tip upfront (moving is typically 10% of total cost for local moves or $5hr per mover) before the move even started. A move that should have taken 3 hours tops (based on inventory list) took 8 hours. Disassembly of one item(bedframe) took them over 1.5 hours to complete, they did not wrap the furniture properly nor to its entirety. In between destinations (5.7 miles) it took the moving truck an hour to get to the second location and an additional 45 minutes to get up to the correct floor from time of arrival. The movers kept complaining about the process of taking an elevator upstairs, the amount of space in the new location to place items, as they were bringing things up out of order and couldn’t place things properly, which is entirely inappropriate because this is THEIR JOB and what they are getting paid for. The movers claimed they needed to come back the next day to reassemble the furniture, as they wouldn’t have enough time to complete before the end of day for fear of receiving a parking ticket. As the client, I had to assist them in moving items to speed up the process. After the move, the men requested I pay them directly in cash for a parking ticket they claimed to receive. They also left all of their trash outside another resident’s apartment in the building without cleaning it up, and I as the client had to clean up their mess. After receiving a 10% tip (more than generous after being disappointed with the service) the movers were combative and demanded more money for a tip. The point of hiring movers is to pay for a service, so you don’t have to lift a finger, it should be painless and seamless with no stress. That is the exact opposite of what my move experience with DUMBO was, this move was the MOST PAINFUL, laborious and stressful experience I have ever had moving. DO NOT use Dumbo Moving for any move you have, seriously.

We hired Dumbo for our April 30 move from Brooklyn. We paid for packing up of our kitchen to avoid wrapping all the fragile items. We also expected them to treat our items with some level of care, especially those that were more fragile. During the move, they failed to pack up any of the fragile cups, glasses or bowls we had paid for them to pack, leaving me to finish the move myself. The movers basically didn't want to do it (neither did we, that's why we paid for the service), so they didn't do it. They also didn't wrap or protect our nice dining chairs in any way, resulting in one of the wooden legs breaking during the move. The movers also, halfway through packing up our apartment, demanded additional payment for "15-20" extra boxes when there were at most 5 extra medium boxes, and falsely claimed our two-story move was actually a three-story move that required additional payment, in cash. Classic scam technique. Since they had all our items and we needed to be out of the apartment that day, I felt compelled to pay them to complete the move and not break more of our stuff. After the move, they have been unapologetic and I've had to fight for every inch. They have reluctantly given a small, partial refund for not packing the kitchen, but refuse to replace the chair they carelessly broke. I had actually used Dumbo twice before, about 7 and 4 years ago, and thought they were good, no complaints. Something must have changed in management because they no longer hire professional movers and act in a very dishonest way. I used to recommend them but now I strongly recommend you look elsewhere. Moving is stressful and expensive enough without having to deal with day-of-moving scams, careless movers that break your stuff, and movers that won't do the job you paid them for.

Hired this Company to move me from Philly to North Carolina. These ppl came to pick up my stuff never provided a list of what they took. Original quote was $1235 to pick up my beds, TV’s boxes and 20 storage bins. When I returned to my storage unit, it was still full. They quoted me an additional $2790 to pick up the rest. I do not even have furniture all clothes & minor items. If I could give zero stars I would!! They stole stuff, broke stuff etc PLEASE DON’T WASTE YOUR MONEY! Our rate changed a few times as well, the 1st movers sat my belongings in a pit of garbage…YES you read that correctly. All FRAGILE STUFF arrived damaged or in pieces, some boxes were opened and resealed, my Dad’s memorabilia yankee bat was stolen as well as a pair of brand new sneakers (who knows what else as I’m still going through things) Then they harassed us for a tip after charging us extra last minute drastic fees (I feel as if that’s why the stuff was stolen) I work to hard and we as customers put our trust in people of service to actually service us and not take advantage….please take your money elsewhere because DUMBO MOVING SEEMS TO BE RAN BY PEOPLE WHO ARE JUST PLAIN DUMB!

Worst moving company!

Don’t use them! I was warned by a friend not to use them and I made a huge mistake by using them! Take my word.

The movers were extremely lazy and slow. It took them 5 hours to only halfway empty out a small apartment. I moved recently with a different company and it only took an hour and a half. The workers were lazy, dumb, obnoxious, and disrespectful.

They refused to figure out how to take my couch down the steps. I paid for the movers to do the job but instead I had to call friends last minute to help me compensate for the workers laziness. Myself, my wife and my young children had to help bring things out to the truck since the guys were so slow and obnoxious.

This company is full of sleezy, money hungry, obnoxious people. You have to literally specify every item as basic as a garbage can and laundry basket or they won’t allow it on the truck.

Since they refused to take all my items I had to pay for a second truck to come a couple days later to take the remaining items. And I had to pay for it! Obnoxious sick people in this company!

The truck arrived hours later than what we arranged.

When we finally got to the new house, the movers refused to bring the items passed the entryway of the house- all beds , mattresses, dressers, clothing were all dumped at the front door. They had no mercy when we begged them to bring the crying children’s beds upstairs and have them assembled so that the children can go to bed before midnight. All we got was attitude and a NO for an answer. Disgusting people!

We were on the phone with Dumbo Movers representatives the entire day but they all play the same sick game with their customers.

Their advertisement on their vans says “have babies and leave the move to us” wow are they the opposite of that! They made the move for our young family such a stressful experience.

Expect a move with Dumbo Movers to take double the amount of time, double the amount of money and double the amount of frustration.

The worst company I've ever dealt with. The quote will be excellent, but the price will be doubled once the movers arrive. There is deceit, unreliability, unprofessionalism, and conniving on their part. Their best strategy is to get the deal, but once they have your items, they double the price. No matter how much you paid for something, if they break it, they will offer you $100. That's why they're the worst. This company has these two guys, Jay and Dan; stay away from them.

Horrible experience with this moving company. Gave me a quote from NY to Texas, then when they came to pick up my items charged me double. After 14 days waiting for delivery the 18 wheeler couldn't drive in my complex and charged me extra $600 like it it was my fault for not being a professional driver because my apartment leasing agent said they never has issues with 18 wheelers driving in and out of this complex. Dumbo was extremely rude and threatening me they will leave my items on the street if I didn't pay right away. Well this was so inconvenient and I was frustrated after making the payment the drivers had to rent a uhaul just for few hours a very small one and at the truck stop they transferred my small one bedroom items and once it arrived I had a broken bookshelf, a broken bathroom Metro Shelving Unit and also a broken lamp. All had to be trashed. Dumbo was rude and did not make any payments. Costumer service on phone will not return your calls or email and you have to read all the fine small prints at bottom. That's how they get you. Please don't use these people you rather go with 2 men and a truk. Dumbo is only a company after your money with no concern for consumers.

Reasons I’ll never book with Dumbo again and you shouldn’t either:

1. My dad watched them literally throw a bunch of my stuff onto the truck (before they realized that he was with me).

2. The day before my move, they said it should be delivered by 3 pm to my storage unit upstate. The day of the move, they told me that they were going to do another move before delivering my stuff because someone else in the area was also moving upstate.

3. I got a call at 5 pm informing me that the truck broke down and they were waiting for a new one in the Bronx. Then they still had 2 apartment’s worth of stuff to load onto the other truck before making the 2 hour drive upstate.

4. A few minutes later, I got a call asking if I could take delivery the following day between 11-1 because they wouldn’t make it to my storage unit in time to finish by 10 pm, when they close.

5. I got a text message the next day saying that delivery would be between 8:30-9. I got a text at 9 letting me know they were 20 minutes away.

6. My boxes piled in the truck were crushing each other, including boxes marked FRAGILE at the bottom of piles.

I had 3 large boxes with arrows printed on them and fragile stickers indicating which way was up. They were all tipped on their sides in the truck.

7. I told them to put aside my computer chair and a box of furniture protectors I bought to protect items in storage. They both got buried.

8. Despite not holding up their end of the deal, and even though some of my moving fees were shared with another person (all fees associated with traveling upstate), the company only offered a 30% discount on my NEXT move, despite knowing that I’ve left the city. And as if I’d ever book them again.

I paid Dumbo $3295 in advance to pack and move my apartment and they literally did not show up. I incurred $550 in late fees from having to reschedule the move. When they did finally show up, an entire day late, they broke my desk ($40) and stole my lamp ($60). They then forged my signature on moving documents and lied to my bank (after I disputed the charges) saying that "the move went fine with no complaint from customer." Despite dozens of calls, texts and emails, (and full acknowledgement from Dumbo that I deserve a refund) I have not received one penny of my money back from Dumbo, and so now I am going to take them to court for my money back, and to sue for forgery of moving documents, and defamation to Bank of America. Whatever you do, do not hire Dumbo Moving.

Absolutely unprofessional! Please read because they come across very cordial and accommodating until something goes wrong. Then they are just another corrupt, denying, third rate organization. The truth with any company, service or product, is not how nice they appear when nothing has happened but how they manage when something does go wrong. Dumbo moving will effectively tell you FU, it's not my problem even if their own employees agree that damage had occurred during the move. I even had agreed to get extra insurance but administrator either forgot of is now denying that I ever request for extra insurance. Regardless, over $10K of damages to my furniture and they say we are not responsible because they don't know what happened while it was sitting in my storage, still wrapped by their own handling! There's camera footage at the storage facility but they are ignoring it hoping that most customers will not follow up or take legal action because of inconvenience or expense. No one is perfect and accidents can happen. But it's how you manage after that counts. Do you want to take a risk with them?

They came so late that the buildings I was moving to and from were trying to close for the day. When they arrived, the movers thought they were only supposed to move a piano, and not my entire studio (even though I had said it was a full studio and paid extra for the piano, which is just an electric upright and not particularly unweildy for a piano). They had to call their superios who indeed told them it was a full studio, and clearly the movers themselves were underprepated for it. Then, despite requesting a van size recommended to me through the phone by Dumbo movers for a studio, they couldn't fit tons of stuff in the van, including a tv, aquarium tank, 6 rugs, 3 suitcases, a backpack, 2 art pieces, 4 chairs, a dining table, cleaning supplies, and fridge contents. And then, they refused to make a second trip.

So I had to, for 3 full days, move all that myself.

All my items were packaged extremely carefully, and professionally (tons of bubble wrap and packing paper), and they still managed to break several items, including those in a box labelled (in large letters) "FRAGILE, DO NOT TILT". That box also had safety packaging just in case, but it still got heavily damaged.

Would not use again.
