Long-distance move from Glendale, AZ to Durham, NC

Moving from Arizona to North Carolina

Our move was Aug 17 2021 and finally arrived Sept 7 2021. On moving day a no name truck came to our door and said they were Oasis moving and storage. We did not know you were a third party. All our paperwork had Compas van. lines. We were charged a total of 20,128 from Compas of which we paid 8,050. Now moving day comes and another company Oasis moving company pulls up and tells us that will be another 19,290 will be our price a total of 39,418. We were downsizing to a 2,100 sq ft house. How can this be. We believe both companies are in business to scam the customer not take care of the customer. All our furnishings were damaged or squashed. The broken items were not to be believed. Both companies should give us our money back and not be in business.

Do not use this company

Our family scheduled a move in August as my husband could not find work. Luckily he found a job and we inquired if there was a possibility of a refund. We were told 2000 of our deposit was tied up with the carrier and could not be refunded. The other portion of our deposit we were told could not be refunded eithe. There was not any service provided and our family is out over 4000. It's a lot of money with two small children and we are unsure what to do next as the company will not return or take Amy phone calls. I keep leaving voice-mails on mailboxes that have not been set up.

Long-distance move from Portland, OR to Lawrence, KS

Terrible experience with Compass Van LInes

Our experience with Compass Van Lines was, in a word, terrible. It was both extremely stressful and financially draining. When I first contacted Compass they stated that the quote they gave me (around $7200) was lower than most companies. This was for a move from Portland, Oregon to Lawrence, Kansas back in late August. The representative (Amanda Baker) told me that the actual price we would pay would not be much different than the estimate. We were given a window of time of 3 days when we could expect the movers to arrive. The night before the last possible day someone from Compass called me to say that their truck had broken down and they might need an extra day before they could pick up our furniture. I told them that that was non-negotiable because the new owner of our Portland house was taking possession the next day. Finally they called later in the evening to say that they could come the next morning. The next day when they came the driver took inventory of all of our items and then produced an invoice with an additional $1400 added to the estimate amount. I noticed the invoice had “Flash Moving Company” printed on it. They arrived in an Enterprise rental truck. I asked why the amount was so much more and he said we were using more cubic feet than stated in the original estimate. Basically there was nothing different from what I originally told them we had, and what they were going to move. We had to agree to it, or they weren’t going to move our stuff. In the process of moving they dropped and broke items in two boxes. There were about 5 young guys that didn’t seem to have a lot of experience moving. We were told that our items would arrive in KS 10 to 21 days after Sept. 1. The day they picked up our stuff was August 27. When we got to KS I called many times to find out about a delivery date and they couldn’t come up with anything. They said we weren’t on the schedule. Amanda Baker didn’t return any of my e-mails or calls. Finally we got a call on September 17 that they were coming the next day. I asked if they had contacted our apartment building for moving-in protocol, and they said no, that was up to us. When they arrived (just 2 guys, and one was the driver) they didn’t like a barrier from a farmer’s market that was in the driveway in the back of our building and said they wouldn’t deliver our stuff until it was removed. The apartment manager came out and explained where they could park and have access but the driver refused. So we had to wait 2 hours (with them charging us an extra $150 per hour while they went somewhere for breakfast) until the market was over. They had arrived in a semi-truck with no elevator or even basic ramp on the back. Before they would move anything they said they needed an extra $525 cash from us. So basically our furniture was being held hostage in their truck until we came up with the cash. When we paid them they had no receipt to give us, and my husband wrote something up for them to sign to show proof that we had paid. We were shocked at the un-professionalism and rudeness. When they delivered our items many were broken, scratched and gouged. Our packing boxes were torn and punched in. We have always saved our packing boxes in past moves but these were so chewed up we threw them all out. It looked like our stuff had literally been thrown into the 2nd truck. I think that we are still suffering PTSD from this experience. I hope no one else has to go through what we did. If we could give zero stars we would...that would be the most appropriate.

Long-distance move from Modesto, CA to McKinney, TX

Absolutely horrible company, probably not ligitimate

This is without doubt the ultimate worst company of any industry I have ever dealt with. Really little more than an extortion racket. You start out talking to some guy named Jake who sounds really nice and helpful. You tell him you are going to measure every item you have and figure out the total cubic feet on a computer program. He says "that's great, you can control your own costs." You give him a deposit of $3237.00. One day before moving someone else calls. He says your numbers are all wrong, He wants an additional $10,000. or they won't show up. It's too late to find another mover and you have to be out of your house in 2 days. You then call the owner. Someone named Chris . Chris of course sounds all helpful and understanding. You tell him you are going to measure the amount of space taken up inside the truck when it is loaded. He says "that's fine, he'll refund the difference." When you measure it you find out your pretty close with your own estimates. You call Chris for the refund, but suddenly Chris can never come to the phone. You call and call and call. Finally some woman (maybe this was Tatiana), says they will dump all your belongings along side the freeway if you keep calling. By the way, Compass is not a moving company, they are a broker operating out of a mail box at a UPS store. The actual mover is called Oasis Moving. Finally, they just quite answering your calls and block your phone number.

When Oasis finally arrives, you discover the "professional movers" consist of one arrogant individual and an assistant he met at a gas station the night before, and hired to help him unload. He want's $5,000 + in cash. Your bank wonders why you want such a large withdrawal in cash. You tell them it's extortion money to Compass Van Lines. When he unloads your stuff, half of it falls down onto the floor of the truck. What they didn't steal they destroyed. The criminal had the nerve to sweep all the broken glass off his truck and into my driveway before he left. By the way, he stiffed the guy from the gas station by underpaying him (the only decent one in the entire group). All told, losses including extortion money, deposits and damaged merchandise exceeded $50,000.00. Chris and his company are simply common criminals. No matter how many times I called to try and resolve the problem. they would not answer, obviously they have permanently blocked my number and will accept no complaints. Putting them out of business is not sufficient, they need to be put into prison.

Long-distance move from Coppell, TX to Dawson Springs, KY

Using Compass Van Lines --- Our Experience Says Don't!

We recently contracted Compass van lines to move us 700 miles across country. Communication, timeliness and care of our belongings was all subpar. While our contract was probably not violated, it was certainly pushed to its limits. Communication was either slow, non-existent or misleading after the initial contract was signed. The time for our furniture to make it from pickup to delivery was discussed as 3-13 days, but probably 5-7 days; it took 25 days with calls regarding status ignored or unanswered. The promised care of our antiques resulted in three pieces being significantly damaged. When calls were made to Compass regarding this breakage, we had to contact the subcontracted carriers who did not return our calls. No one took responsibility, which means to get any reimbursement requires dealing with an insurance company. This care of our belongings can best be described by a visual of the opening of the truck that finally made it to our new home: an antique glass-footed end table was on its side with a large antique iron kettle stuffed between its fragile legs with our gas grill placed on its side against the top of the kettle. All of this was above several layers of boxes and furniture. In addition, my husband's hat collection was lost, and we gained someone else's bedspread. We reported the latter, but it remains in our basement. The things we packed in boxes were not broken (except the lost hats); rather, all damage was done to furniture that Compass subcontractors wrapped and moved. In conclusion, we do not recommend Compass.

Long-distance move from Washington to Florida

This was a terrible experience start to finish

First we got a quote of 6k after going room by room in a 5 bedroom house. Then I got a call and they give me the square footage of the truck that they will be using. It was a 16 foot truck There is no way our stuff would have fit in that size truck. We ended up needing a 26 foot truck and had to leave tons of things behind. Then when they came to the door the added about 10 k to the price mind you this is moving day we had no other option. Then we gave them our move in date. When we got to out location 2 weeks later inquired to when our stuff might be coming and they told us they hadn't moved our stuff yet. Mind you all along we stated we were moving in on a specific date. Then another week later called again to see where our stuff is, and they still haven't even moved it! this is week 3 and they tell us it may be another 2-3 weeks until we get our stuff. Completely irritated. They gave us a story that sometimes people change dates so we have to call in and tell them to move it again even though we already did that. Its terrible and a bait and switch situation. This is a 3200 mile move and were now having to purchase everything again here because its been weeks.

If I could give 1 star I would

This company is not one I would trust with my worst enemies stuff let alone my own. Start with a phone "interview" of our items and no real check of what we actually own. Gave an estimate of this amount with a requirement of a 40% deposit. After paying the deposit and checking more reviews (Found other places have stated they get upcharges by the real movers by 10k also inconsistent delivery date) I was going to go for it until I got an email saying their Service Department has changed hands. This made me very uneasy. I had already reviewed the cancellation policy and decided 40% of what I paid was worth just not having to deal with the people.

Again I would not recommend this company just from my pre-experience with them.

Horrible Service

*** WARNING MOVERS BEWARE DO NOT SIGN A CONTRACT WITH THIS COMPANY***

Compass Vanlines Movers is NOT a moving company. I signed a contract with them to pack and move my furniture from Virginia to Ohio, only to learn after the fact that they only collect a huge down payment 35% of the fee upfront, and then contract the job out to moving companies. I was given an estimated cost for 1561 cubic feet which I questioned because I didn’t have that much furniture to move, and this was double the amount of cubic footage needed. I was told the movers would provide the actual cubic feet once the truck was loaded and the billing would be adjusted according, but of course that did not happen. The company On Track Movers, LLC they contracted to move my furnishing lost, as well as damaged several items and to date I have not been compensated for the overcharge or loss. Four movers were sent to pack and load my furnishing based on the estimated cubic footage, but only two were sent to unload the furnishing due to the actual footage. The movers confirmed I did not use 1561 cubic feet only about 700 cubic feet of the space on the truck. I paid over $13,000 for this move and to date no one from this company has returned my calls to address this matter. Compass Vanlines Movers, LLC, Customer Service Representatives lacked candor and were slow to respond to my calls for assistance. When I finally reached a representative, I was provided a third-party phone number to call to submit a claim and advised it would take up to 120 days. It is totally unacceptable to expect anyone to wait four months for a matter to be resolved. Compass Vanlines CSR advised she would contact On Track Movers for the actual cubic footage and get back with me, but of course she never did returned a call. BEWARE once their sales representatives have your signed contract, they no longer will speak with you. The contract states arbitration must occur in their home state of Florida, but I am looking into what other legal action I can take against this company. SHAME, SHAME, SHAME on this company for misleading and taking advantage

Long-distance move from Port Townsend, WA to Pittsfield, ME

COMPANY SHOULD BE SUED FOR BREECH OF CONTRACT

*DO NOT HIRE THIS COMPANY*

I don't even know where to start with my experience with Compass Van Lines except to say that I am looking into my rights as a consumer and pursuing legal help as it is ongoing.

I hired them to move my 700 sq foot 1 bedroom apt. from WA state to Maine, I was quoted $7500 (with the rep going through my packing list and telling me I even had extra room for a few more items as I was under the minimum 750 sq ft).

I was told it would take 10-21 days for my stuff to be delivered. I still haven't received my belongings and it has been 40 days since my stuff was picked up by some random guys in an unmarked box truck (Compass does not tell you they use subcontractors, they actually lead you to believe otherwise by using language such as "we" until the subcontractor shows up for pick up).

3 of the 4 subcontractor workers spoke no english nor did they measure anything but they have the gall to charge you an additional $3600 for so-called "additional items" per cubic feet. Though my one large suitcase was on the original Compass quote list, I later saw they charged me for 5 suitcases, their math meant I paid $280 for one large suitcase to be moved!

They purposely put you in a situation where you feel you have no choice because it is days away from you flying to your new destination and in my case, also starting school so of course you don't have the time to re-arrange your entire move. When I called Compass to tell them what these guys were doing I was assured Compass would adjust the paperwork and fees once they got & went through the subcontractors paperwork. The subcontractor workers also could not give me copies of my paperwork so I had to take photos on my phone.

The subcontractor company has no web presence and does not answer the phone number on the paperwork and you cannot leave a message because the inbox is full. I have called Compass every day since the 21 day window passed and then they tell you that legally the carrier has 30 days to deliver. Well that 30 days is up tomorrow and no matter how many times you call and try to get some kind of ETA, the random Compass rep you talk to will tell you the same thing, that the carrier is having problems getting a truck and drivers, they promise to call the carrier and have them call you back but they never call you back & no one at Compass calls you back or ever does anything to help you. This cannot be a legal way to operate a business in the US, these people sold us moving services, not indefinite storage in some facility god-knows-where, I cannot believe what I am dealing with, for all I know, my stuff is stolen since Compass won't disclose the location they are holding my stuff. These people have my entire life, I NEED MY BED AND CLOTHES etc., I NEED MY TEXTBOOKS, I NEED SOMETHING TO SHOW FOR THE $7000 I have already paid. And they want me to just sit back and wait until god-knows-when to get it delivered, and then they want another $4,000?!! Are you kidding me??!!!!!!

Between being stuck in Maine with nothing and trying to get through my first few weeks of school, I am stressed to the boiling point.

Both Compass and their subcontractor need to be forced out of business, this is beyond unethical.
