A1A Moving and Storage

Worst experience with A1A. I am a single female moving from New York to Virginia. On February 20, 2020 I signed a contract for A1A to move me on March 13th with delivery in Virginia the week of March 16th. I also gave a deposit. Ian was my salesman. I told Ian when I was considering A1A I was hesitant to hire them because of the poor reviews I had read about their company and the complaints I read with the BBB. Ian assured me that those poor reviews and complaints were just a few out of thousands of moves they did each year. He assured me that my move would go smoothly.

On Tuesday, March 10th I confirmed with Ian (via text) that I was still scheduled for pickup at 8:00 a.m. on Friday March 13th. He confirmed and said that dispatch would call me on Thursday March 12th with details for the pickup. On Thursday March 12th at 4:30 p.m. (approximately 15 hours prior to my pickup) A1A dispatch called and said they would no be coming as they would not have a truck in my area on Friday and did not know when they might have a truck available in my area. They said they would be happy to put me on a waiting list but could not give me a time frame as to when they might be able to get my things picked up. The lady on the phone (I failed to get her name) was very rude and unsympathetic. I told her that I had a signed contract and that I had paid a deposit. She said that they would refund my deposit. I asked her what was I supposed to do as I was starting a new job on March 23rd and had to be moved. I asked her why did they not call me weeks ago to tell me they couldn’t make the move so I would have time to find another moving company and she said that they do not know until one day prior to the move if they will actually be in a certain area and be able to do a specific move and therefore they can only give less than a one day notice of their cancellation.

She went on to say that she was sorry but there was nothing they could do for me. She told me she had many more calls to make that day and could not stay on the phone. She gave me a phone number and told me I could call her back later (which I did and had to leave her a message to refund my deposit immediately).

I cannot tell you how stressed out I have been over the last 15 hours and how inconvenient this has been.

In the end I wound up renting a UHaul and hiring two men to load my belongings onto the UHaul. I also had to find someone to drive the UHaul to Virginia for me (as I have a vehicle I have to drive and was not comfortable towing it behind a large UHaul) and had to pay for a plane ticket for that person to get back to New York.

Never in my life have I ever heard of a company doing business like this. I would not recommend this company to anyone and I am filing a complaint with the BBB as I feel that in addition to my deposit being returned, I should be reimbursed for the cost of hiring the two movers and the cost of the plan ticket to fly my driver back to New York.

The estimate they give you (Ian) is to get you in the door then when they show up and the up charges start. They must pay the on site foremen a percent of whatever he can get out of you.

I saw this coming so before they loaded the truck I took a tape measure and measured with the foremen the space inside of truck that our move would take. After truck was loaded went over measurements and came to 588cf foremen said we go by lines on the truck and its 788cf. I guess basic math and tape measuring skills don't apply to A1A. They then threatened to take the stuff off the truck and leave on sidewalk if I didn't pay. They are the worst you have been warned!

This company is criminal. They lied, added on exorbitant fees and miscommunicated delivery times. They packaged my belongings with

No care or expertise. Once my belongings arrived my rugs were a disaster, folded with no care and boxes haphazardly placed inside my home. Careless handling and broken dishes. Absolutely no respect for my belongings. They had up charged to carry my sofa up 3 flight of stairs and lied about the fees. I would never want anyone else to be taken advantage of.

A1A movers was contracted through Levic Van Lines to pick up my furniture for a move from California to New Jersey on 11/25/2020. It is now 1/29/2021 and the company is holding my belongings hostage somewhere in California. I’ve lost EVERYTHING I EVER OWNED and no one from the company will respond to my calls or emails. I even submitted a hostage claim and claim through the U.S. Federal Bureau. Avoid this company at all costs . A1A if you see this RELEASE JAMELIA HARRIS BELONGINGS ASAP.

Still waiting for them to get me my "missing" items.

Literally the worst movers you could possibly use. Not only did they lose a box, but almost every box was damaged that came. Some of my things were broken, including my bicycle and a record player that was packed with packing peanuts. The owner, Steve Goldman, is vindictive and sexist. He tried to change the price of what we owed them, which was different than what was quoted. When we managed to talk to him, he said that he would change it back to the original price but less than 2 minutes later changed his mind and hung up on us.

It is impossible to get ahold of someone and it took 2 weeks to get ahold of anyone regarding payment. Not only that, but our packages did not come on time (which is outlined in the contract). Worst customer service possible. Their salesperson I spoke to was great, but everyone else was rude.

I have yet to hear back from someone regarding my broken items.

DO NOT USE. Unless you like to overpay and deal with misogynists. The owner is a crook and doesn't deserve a business.

A lot of their 5 star reviews are fake. This is so they can balance out and not dip to 1 star. The users that are "commenting" have no social media presence at all. BEWARE. Don't go with a company that posts a 5 star review just a dew days after a 1 star review. They're clearly a scam and not worth the time or effort.
