Long-distance move from Los Angeles, CA to Chicago, IL

Do NOT use Zippy Shell.

Just look at the consistency of the bad reviews. I wish I read them before I booked zippy shell. They STILL won't tell me when my container will arrive. I get the same runaround that a manager will call me back. The only way I can find out when my container arrives is IF I pay in full. How convenient to them.
Customer service is useless. They do not help, it sounds like they just read over a list of approved answers they can use. Managers are never on site when you need them and of course that's who you need to deal with to get an actual answer.
Cost wise: I would have paid double elsewhere just to be treated fair and told the honest truth. I keep getting the same BS from multiple staff.
Overall I could go on for days but just read all the other reviews - I agree with all the negative ones.

Long-distance move from Arenas Valley, NM to Colorado Springs, CO

NM to Colorado.

When I booked my move I was advised to take insurance out for breakage. This seemed to be a good idea, but the p po locy doesn't cover loading and unloading. I had a antique stain glass that was broken above repair, an antique radio that can be repaired, and an antique table that's not repairable. The packers pushed to get my stuff into the box, I feel this is why some of my stuff broke. ZIPPY TAKES NO RESPONSIBLITY. I could have even made a bigger stink but didn't want to makw to big of a stink..SO CONSUMER be AWARE. I HAD MOLD GROWING ON MY DISHWARE AND MICE DROPPINGS ON MY BLANKETS AND TOWELS..

Long-distance move from New Rochelle, NY to Tempe, AZ

Move went well.

After reading countless reviews about zippy shell, I almost backed out. I was worried about breakage, poor logistics, hidden fees etc. I started in NYC and went to Tempe AZ. The move went well, I got my items on the 12th business day (they quote 8-12 business days). I also read about items breaking etc. I did not really experience this, one item in a bin cracked (a lamp) and a few small scratches appeared on my glass table, however, my glass wasn't fully wrapped, so I could've done more on my end. The movers in NY packed my move very tightly (in a good way) so that no items would shift around. When I unlocked my shell, everything looked as it was in NY which surprised me. The gentleman that delivered my stuff in Phoenix (Daniel I believe) even helped me and my mover which was much appreciated. The one issue I had was scheduling a delivery to my exact house, however it was a holiday weekend, and per the agreement, they used the term business days, so to be fair, it wasn't really that bad, just a bit frustrating with the multiple calls I had to make. I would recommend this company, and for those who had breakage issues, I bought lots of moving pads/blankets and the movers I had help with loading used them adequately so that really helped that not be an issue. Again it was packed properly and tight so stuff really couldn't go anywhere. I will say that I had a 2 bedroom apartment and I sold my couch prior, if I hadn't, there is no way it would've fit, so the shell is probably a small 2 bedroom or one bedroom plus, not a 2-3 bedroom as advertised. I did not go through Zippy Shell for the unload, just hired one individual to help me and it was done it 2 hours. Thanks again, and as I mentioned I would use this company again, they were at least 1500 cheaper then my next best quote given what they did.

Great service!

We moved from NJ to CA, and Zippy Shell couldn't have made it easier. The movers they hired to load and unload on both ends were all very professional and efficient! The cost was WAY better than pods and the customer service was also excellent. They did have to move our move day due to a scheduling issue, and for many that might have been a problem, but it was a godsend for us because we totally needed the extra day to finish packing. We would definitely hire Zippy Shell for future moves.

They never said the truth.

Terrible company from the beginning they lied to us about how much stuff would fit into container then they told us 7 business days to move from PA to AZ for the next month I kept calling to find out where my stuff was and all they told me it's in transit until they told me it actually never left PA! One day after more then a month, they showed up without scheduling then they charged us for storage because in their system in never showed delivered! When we called for a refund for the delay they said sure our manager will call you back.. Never happened no matter how many times I called. Basically liars DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY.

Please! Whatever You do do Not Use This Company.

The worst moving and storage company you will ever know. First, when I originally moved the truck was 3 hours late coming to my home. I'd hired outside movers and they were there waiting for the truck to get here and were on the clock. Secondly when they finally got to my home they were under the impression that I was using them to load and move my things and because I wasn't they claimed that the truck they brought was only for loading and moving if THEY were doing it. I let them know that I was loading and only moving a few items and that everything else would be put into their storage unit. After another 2 hours of going back and forth with them and everyone trying to get in contact with a manager (it was a Saturday and the local company was closed and the corporate office could not help with their local partners) the movers finally decided to stay (yes, they actually told me they were leaving). Then once my movers started trying to load items onto the truck the loading piece on the truck did not work smh. My movers were moving large heavy furniture and the loading lift would not come out. So you could imagine how difficult and how much more time was spent trying to load my things onto the truck and off of it. Third, when I originally booked the storage unit with Zippy shell I was informed that the container would hold two rooms. This was a lie. It held one and half rooms of furniture and no boxes. All that could fit was some of my living room furniture and my bed and dresser. We had to squeeze boxes on there AFTER I took my bed and dresser off of the truck at the final destination. After that I was able to add my boxes. Also, once we got to the final destination to unload my bed and dresser it took extra time because the loading lift was not working. Instead of them just having to roll everything off they literally had to hook up lifting rope to get it off. As you can imagine that took so much more time and I had to come out of the pocket more money. Now I am in the process of moving and trying to get my things out of storage with them and they are giving me the run around. You have to jump through hoops to get someone on the phone and or to schedule a day to just unpack the container. If you're planning on unloading your unit or having them drop it off at your new place make sure to call two months in advance or you wont get your day that you need and they don't do anything to help. Also, apparently they merged with another company and moved my things from the original storage warehouse to another one. Never not once did they call or email me to inform me of this move. I just found out when I called trying to schedule my move. I will never use this company to move or store anything ever again and I urge anyone looking for a company to move and store your things to look elsewhere because Zippy Shell is by far the worst company to ever do business with. NEVER AGAIN!

Long-distance move from Birmingham, AL to Denver, CO

Just the worst self-move company.

Do not ship with Zippy Shell. No status reports, delayed shipping, ineffectual customer service, and shoddy compensation.

We scheduled to ship a shell across the country for May 18. Two and a half weeks later, we had not received any update about the shell's status. When we called, they told us the shell had not even left the origin city. The shell arrived over a week late. When we tried to schedule a delivery date, they provided us a date 11 days later than requested. That means they were planning to hold our belongings for a month and a half, instead of two weeks.

Their customer service is also terrible. First, they do not respond to the email address they provide in their emails. Second, the nice people on the phone have no autonomy, and they have no ability to help you with your problems. You cannot get through to a manager. Third, they show no interest in rectifying any complaints. I am blown away that a company like this can operate at all!

Long-distance move from Valparaiso, IN to Sevierville, TN

Zippy Shell move was disappointing.

I found Zippy Shell on-line after looking for options with a move, where (1) my move-in date was not firmly set when I scheduled the move; (2) I only had a 2-BR location to move for myself, so limited "stuff" and (3) I wanted to manage cost. Zippy Shell initially seemed like a good choice. In general, the customer service people were friendly and easy to deal with on the phone, and you did get to talk with a person. They could schedule the pick-up when I wanted, and the trailer and loaders arrived as promised. However, the coordinator did not estimate the loading size correct, so they could not fit all of my furnishings and boxes into the trailer. This was after I had spent more than an hour on the phone with the coordinator - lesson learned: Always have someone come out to estimate! So I had to subsequently rent another van to finish my move. Second issue, was that the loaders tried so hard to fit everything, they damaged some of my items, including damage to a leather sofa which I specifically mentioned for good protection. The damages weren't terrible, but it was all preventable if the loaders had taken more care. Third issue was that since I have submitted my claim on the damages, they have never acknowledged the claim or responded to it at all. And this was after purchasing their protection as part of the package. I was also disappointed by the time it took to get the trailer to their storage location, and then get it here - multiple days each time. I did move between states, but an easy single day drive. The crew at the destination that unloaded did do a very good job, and they pointed out all the damages that were done, clearly as a result of the loading and loading/transportation. Lastly, I went with Zippy Shell to save some cost related to a dedicated move service. However, by the time I rented the additional van to get what they couldn't fit, and replace/fix the damages, I could have gone with the dedicated service. Zippy Shell might work for some, but I was left disappointed. An no one from Zippy Shell even followed up after the move. Next move I will go another route.

California to Florida Move.

I have to admit, after reading so many negative reviews about this company company, I was very worried about using them. They are literally the only Pod type of company that would service my remote mountain town in Ca so I had no choice but to roll the dice. Turns out that I’m glad I did. Both pickup and delivery were done on time and efficiently. The movers were professional and friendly and we paid for 3 hours of loading and unloading and they got the job done on both sides of the trip. We did have a few awkward and heavy items too. I guess it all depends on where your being serviced as they utilize 3rd party companies for the actual moving and storage. No complaints here and they were honestly the least stressful part of our cross country move.

Don't use.

When I first called to setup my date for zippyshell to come by they told me one price and a totally different size POD that they would bring. When the date came I got a small TRAILER that for what ever reason costs twice as much as what I was told on the phone. I called and told the office after the guy brought the trailer.

They said the person I had spoken with was from their sister company packrat. So I asked then why didn't I get something from packrat if that is who I spoke with and given pricings for? The person went on about how since packrat was unable to make it they(Zippyshell) picked up my request. Without informing me at all that this was done or that there would be a change in price and transport unit size.

The trailer was to small for what we needed and they wanted to charge us 2000$ for cancelling the move with them, I said I will not be paying because they were not the company I signed an agreement with. I ended up getting a Uhaul instead for 682$ after filling a charge back and fraud claim through my bank.

Long-distance move from Ann Arbor, MI to Los Angeles, CA

Booked 6 months in advance, ZippyShell did not deliver.

TL;DR: DO NOT HIRE!

We booked over 6 months in advance for our move MI to CA, and ZippyShell sent several automated emails approaching the date our container was scheduled to be delivered to us (3 days before our flight), indicating they knew the correct date in their system.

When the date arrives? No container. I called to ask where it is "It might still be coming, there's no guarantee what time of day it arrives." I had a missed call that day and asked if it might have been from them "Our drivers only call once, if you miss it, you need to schedule another day. We're not sure if that call was our driver, wait a few more hours to see if it comes."

A few hours later (closer to 5pm) I call back wanting to speak with someone before business hours end, since it appears to not be arriving that day. I hear "Sorry, due to an error in our system your container was not scheduled for local delivery today." Why didn't the first person tell me this?!
Me: "Okay, what can we do?"
ZippyShell (on a Saturday, 3 days before my flight): "Because it's the weekend, no supervisors are working and no one is authorized to schedule a new delivery. You'll need to call back Monday to schedule a new delivery."
Are you serious?! Our flight is Tuesday afternoon, we need to hope ZippyShell can deliver same-day on Monday, or somehow deliver Tues morning so we can rush load everything in before our flight?!

I wonder how we got into this disaster of a situation and see 100+ 1-star reviews on this site hidden lower on the search results page (Oops! Did we hire the worst company available? Yes we did: customers complain about containers being delayed more than a month, not leaving origin points, interiors of containers looking like a bomb went off by arrival time, etc.).

ZippyShell already dropped the ball on us failing to deliver the date we had booked 6 months in advance. Monday we switch to PODS and call to cancel ZippyShell. Guess what? ZippyShell tries charging us fees for "same day cancellation" -- wrong. Same day cancellation would have been 2 days earlier on Saturday, this is 2-day late cancellation after they dropped the ball. I asked ZippyShell to not only refund all our money, but for additional compensation to cover extra costs for moving professionals we'd now need to hire to load a container in under 1-2 hours before our flight departs on Tuesday. Of course ZippyShell wasn't interested in offering any form of compensation.

In the end, everything worked out well: PODS delivered 11am Tuesday and we fully loaded it before our flight. PODS proceeded to deliver the container on time, with nothing damaged inside (no apparent bombs going off inside as reported by other ZippyShell customers). It was terrible hiring ZippyShell in the first place, but it felt like we dodged a bullet when we cancelled and shifted to a competitor.

TERRIBLE experience.

Contracted with Zippy in Mobile, Ala. to pick up and store our furnishings while we are building home on the coast in Alabama.
Received a call telling us they were going out of business and we only had a few days to contract with another company to reload and store our furniture. Had to pay for unloading/loading and a more expensive monthly charge to store in addition travel expenses to and from Mobile to oversee move. Corporate VERY unreasonable and refused any help. Thinking seriously about going legal beagle on this one. Terrible company, good movers, but very bad, expensive experience. Would not recommend them to move my doghouse.

HORRIBLE COMPANY!! My husband and I are over 60. We booked with zippy shell because of the movers at the beginning and at the end. When I went to schedule the drop off.. OH SURPISE we don't have movers in your area. You need to find your own. Then they agreed to drop it off on Friday and pickup on Monday. I asked them what time so I could schedule the movers. They told me they don't know they will call me an hour before drop off. They SUGGESTED I get someone over the weekend. Now I'm supposed to pay weekend help to unload my belongings. I asked to speak to the supervisor. I was told "She isn't going to tell you anything I didn't tell you!" I asked again to speak to the supervisor and was finally connected. She told me she did not have the number for the warehouse (right..) but she said between 8 and noon.. We shall see I think she just told me that to get me off of the phone..

Literally the worst experience and customer service. They run a scheme where third party movers come out and charge you additional fees that are never disclosed. The absolute worst company. They promised they could fit our two bedroom townhome into one large container. It didn’t fit and we were totally vulnerable. Dishonest company - stay away from them.

I got scammed. The container was badly damaged in transit and they didn't bother to tell me. It went into storage so I didn't find out until I finally had it delivered. The contents was a complete jumble (my guess is that the rig overturned or the container was dropped by the storage crane) and many things were damaged or destroyed. The delivery driver had to crowbar the cage doors as they were horribly misaligned and wouldn't budge. I filled out their claim form and heard nothing. So far, I've sent them a dozen emails for a few months and have not received a single reply. I called their number, but they say it's only for sales and the only way is to send an email. They are a dishonest bunch - stay away from this outfit.

A horse drawn wagon door to door would have been faster.

The estimated delivery date is to the local warehouse. There were no available appointments for ~~A MONTH~~ to actually deliver to my door. Despite having a "guaranteed" delivery date to the warehouse, you cannot schedule home delivery until it arrives at the warehouse.

I made numerous calls to their customer service, most of which ended poorly. A few of the things that happened on these calls: I was hung up on, I was lied to (said they would put a note in my file; future reps could not find any such note), laughed at for my troubles. Zippy Shell charged $75 for elevator use, but did not actually charge me until end of fiscal year. It's past my deadline for getting that reimbursed for moving from my job.

Dishonest, misleading, and costly.

Like many other have noted, Zippy Shell is dishonest in their dealings, they mislead their customers, and charge ridiculous fees. We used them to move our contents several states away thinking the convenience would be worth the cost. Well, Zippy claimed they couldn't deliver our items on a Saturday without an extra $900 fee!! How they can't deliver things on a weekend is beyond me, but I assumed my $5300 would have covered getting me my things. Since we didn't pay the fee they said they couldn't deliver our items till Wednesday, 8 days after we requested the items. SO, they say we have to pay a $477 fee to cover storage since our 30 days is up by one day since we didn't get our items on Saturday. Basically, they'll charge you any way they can, and they absolutely REFUSE to work with you via phone. As others have noted their customer "service" isn't helpful and doesn't offer any service. I'm filing a complain with the BBB and I'm hopeful others will do the same so that they stop scamming people out of money! Do yourself a favor and DON'T USE ZIPPY SHELL!!

Refund of $3000 took over six months.

Is there a 0 rating? What a terrible experience. The local loaders had no clue how many containers I needed which caused a delay of pick up and delivery. The damage was too extensive to worry about.

They should have billed me for one month storage but they kept billing me $700 per month for five months after the delivery had taken place.

I made exhaustive phone calls and wrote extensive emails explaining in error. Until I found the CEO email address online, I got no resolution.

Once I emailed the CEO (he didn't respond, of course) my reimbursement came pretty quick.

They don't know what they are doing. It's local folks that but the franchise and have no experience with moving, logistics, staffing, etc, etc, etc.

Get ready for getting ripped off , bad service with a smile.

I was moving from Sonoma County to Salt Lake City and found the salesman quite helpful and honest. They send me a container that would not close, didn't care when I mentioned it is going to rain and will leak into it. I had to tarp it myself. After coming to pick it up the driver admitted they have a bunch of containers that do not close. Another surprise is the 'storage fee', which the 'honest' sales person told me was included. I asked him pretty clearly if included in the price. The whole process of pick up took four phone calls and constant misinformation. The delivery was about the same, since they promised 8-noon, and then told me that's an estimate after I called because they are not showing up. Which meant, I had a moving crew sitting around they actually showed up! Beware every time you call Zippyshell your talking to someone in Florida or somewhere in the south, that is just looking on a computer screen, and barely has any real info but the script they are given. Horrible.

I would give 0 stars if I could - they didn't show up for my move at all. After planning a long-distance move from NYC to Rochester, I had everything scheduled (and confirmed) for a Friday move. After missing the 'time window' they gave us for move time, we called and could not reach anyone helpful.

After calling ALL DAY, they told us our move had been canceled. Seriously?! Also, it was a joke that they could only lower our cost by $150 for this HUGE MISTAKE.

They rescheduled for the next Monday (which is ridiculous but we had no options at that point) and gave us a set time window again. They did not show up during this time window. It was AWFUL! They then called around 4:30 and said the movers were on the way - but they never showed up. This sounds like a joke, but it's the truth. DO NOT USE THEM!! I am not sure if they're a scam or what. We had to find other movers last minute, and they caused us SO MUCH STRESS. Zippy Shell is the worst, especially their customer service because you can't even reach them if you need help.

I am hopefully going to get to my shell tomorrow and unload it myself after renting a truck. If I thought this was an experience only I had, I wouldn't be posting this review, but over and over again, across the county, I read reviews others who've had similar experiences.

I am adding tothosecomplaints. I have waited online for hours on the phone and days for call back trying to get my container to my home. Finally I am renting a u-haul truck to unload the container into the truck. Mind you this is all in the middle of a pandemic. The customer service is non existent. They promise they will call you back and they will get a resolution specialist and even a manager to call you but NOTHING. The firewall to actually contact someone is huge. I hope those of you who've had issues with this company will file reports with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and Washington State Utilities and Transportation commission. These guys also have other companies and so they stay hidden. Know that the subcontract with PackRat, who is a subsidiary.

Do Not Use!

If I could give 0 stars I would. This is the worst company I have ever worked with. We had scheduled a move from NYC to Cincinnati. We flew into NYC, packed up everything in the middle a pandemic, while paying for childcare out of state, only to not have the movers show up on the scheduled day. When their window for arrival passed, we called and could not get a hold of anyone. It took us ALL DAY before we got a text message from some third party company letting us know that the move would not be occurring and Zippy Shell would be "graciously" offering us $100 off to reschedule. It felt like a sick joke. Finally after two days on the phone, we were told we would be compensated completely and movers would be arriving the next day. We almost missed our flight to pick up our kids and THEN they couldn't even fit everything in the Shell. They did a horrible job packing it all (we paid for the loading) and broke a kitchen island in the process. We had to order a second shell, which they are claiming will cost more than the first shell. Again, we've spent DAYS trying to get a hold of someone to sort this all out and every single time, we're told that the person on the other line is submitting an email to management. I feel so stupid for using this company after seeing all of their negative reviews. It is absolutely unbelievable that they are still in business. DO NOT USE ZIPPY SHELL FOR YOUR MOVE! Zippy Shell - The Worst of The Worst!

I hardly take the time to write a bad review - but I had such a HORRIBLE experience with Zippy Shell that it warranted taking the time to warn others. I've moved cross country twice and decided to try a moving pod this time as last time with a moving service my boxes arrived completely crushed. After price shopping around, Zippy Shell earned by business by its competitive pricing. My belongings left California on May 28 and were due to arrive (I thought) a week or two later. When I called June 9th to see where my pod was, it had still not even left California 2 weeks later (it was just sitting at their warehouse while they "coordinated" logistics.) When I inquired why it was still in California when it was due to arrive in Florida within 2 weeks - they told me 10-1 5 BUSINESS days which is essentially 3 weeks. The VERY latest it was supposed to be delivered was June 17th, which comes and goes with NO DELIVERY but they still had the nerve to bill me in FULL with NO delivery. I start calling them to see where my pod is - numerous times a day I had wait times in excess of 1 hour+ each time. I'm sorry that's just NOT ACCEPTABLE FOR A PAYING CUSTOMER. You can also press * for them to call you back which allegedly holds your place in line, but I did this 3 separate times and no one ever calls you back. I started panicking as I had a wedding date approaching and my dress to be hemmed was in the pod, along with the title and deed to my car for a DMV appt I had scheduled weeks in advance according to my Zippy Shell LATEST delivery date. I finally get someone on the phone after no less than 12 calls (I even sent them my call log with screenshots of the extended wait times - all over 45+ min, one even 97 minutes before I gave up and hung up and 2 threatening emails to dispute the charge to show how UNRESPONSIVE they were to a customer demanding answers) someone FINALLY picks up and tells me technically it was only 1 day late because they don't count delivery to YOUR ADDRESS for that 10-15 day window, they count delivery to their warehouse in your area as your delivery date. I said WHAT? I've never heard of such an absurd thing - unless I have my belongings delivered to me, DO NOT count them as "delivered" - so they refused to give me more than a measly $50 for my late delivery. Even though the pod had arrived to the warehouse on June 18th (which was already over the MAX delivery time) they took another week to deliver them to my actual address - my pod did not arrive until June 24th!! It was picked up May 28th - they took almost a month to get me my stuff when I drove here by car cross country in 3 days! I think I could have walked my items over faster. They destroyed 2 very important time schedules I was on for a wedding and dmv and were completely unresponsive, unapologetic, and a disgrace of a moving service. HORRIBLE COMPANY! HORRIBLE SERVICE. HORRIBLE CUSTOMER RESPONSE TEAM.

Extreme delays with no communication -- DO NOT USE.

Absolutely do NOT use this company. Zippy Shell promised us (and our contract stipulated) our belongings would be delivered in 7-10 days, or 6-8 business days. We are currently on day 18 without our belongings and have no delivery date in sight. Zippy Shell’s customer service can only tell us that our belongings have reached the destination warehouse and that they are attempting to get in contact with them. They would not let us contact the warehouse or even tell us where it is located. It took numerous phone calls from both myself and my boyfriend to even get Zippy Shell to pick up a phone and call the warehouse. To say we are disappointed is an understatement as we are currently living and attempting to work in an apartment with a blow-up mattress as our only furniture. So if you care about your belongings avoid this company.
