RoadWay Moving & Storage

After doing some lengthy research on selecting a long-distance moving company to transport our cherished belongings from Ontario to New Brunswick this summer, we selected Roadway Moving (Toronto) for the job.

Our selection was based on a number of criteria such as communication, availability, equipment, storage, transportation timelines, costs and of course care for our belongings. It was critical to us that a company be open, honest and have the professional integrity we were searching for.

Although we are still in the midst of our move, to date, Roadway Moving had showed up on the date promised (July 23rd) to pick up our belongings and packed them into two trucks using six (6) movers and hauled everything off to a depot where they were put into storage for up to eight (8) weeks of included storage and there they will remain until our closing date in mid-September.

We are scheduled to receive our belongings on either September 16th or 17th which is a day or two after our closing date for our new home.

Part of the reason we had selected Roadway Moving was their commitment to the entire process whereby they would not only pick up, store/hold and transport our items but their promise to complete the process and place our belongings into the designated areas within our new home!

We are only halfway through our journey so far…. so…. stay tuned for the second half of our trek and we will be sure to update our experience here... (there are also some sites on Facebook we’ve joined and follow for people who have moved from Ontario to the eastern Provinces and we’ll be happy to share our experience there as well for those seeking a long-distance moving company)…….. (NOTE: we only gave 3/5 stars at this point because we are only halfway through our process thus far (3 is the middle which is where we are) and shall update once our journey is complete!)

SCAM ARTISTS and elderly abuse. If I could give these people 0 stars, I would. These movers roped my parents in with nice customer service at the beginning - "Maria" said she would take good care of them. They were quoted for $1,500 initially for the move and a few months of storage between moves. The movers arrived several hours late, took multiple smoke breaks on the property and got my parents to do heavy lifting. By 11pm when the truck was loaded, they got my exhausted parents to sign a new contract for $7,000. Two days later, the bill was up to $10,000. My parents were told that if they didn't pay, they wouldn't get their stuff back.

Hands down the most honest, reliable, careful movers around. Canada Road way moving is quick to respond, checks in and follows up to make sure the process is seamless throughout. I had to change the arrival time SIGNIFICANTLY the night before, and it was no problem. The movers were polite, wrapped and moved everything carefully as if it were their own, and quickly did it. We tried to feed them, and they barely stopped to eat! So refreshing to have a company do what they say they will...and just as they said, simple billing with NO HIDDEN FEES!

Absolutely terrible company to deal with.

If you are considering a relocation in the near future here are a few observations from mine and my dogs recent move from Ontario to Nova Scotia. I hired Roadways Moving and Storage ( AKA East Coast Van Lines and Move Me Again ) based in Toronto. After booking and leaving a deposit based on an early quote of just over$2000 which I knew was low, a pickup date of Nov 15th with a 5 to 7 day drop off I confirmed my booking. I filled out a requested inventory and received a revised quote of $3450. This was acceptable considering the amount of stuff I have.

On the 15th Nov the truck did not arrive leaving me in a house I no longer owned and all my belongings packed and ready to move. After nearly a day of frantic phone calls by me the movers diverted a truck which arrived on the 16th. They added numerous charges to the original quote, like $150 for packing tape ( 100 times actual cost) $300 each to load my snow blower and lawn tractor and other sundry stuff.

For the next week they went dark on me not answering the phone or voice mails or e.mails enquiring about an eta. Until late Friday when they phoned and demanded $7667.80 before they could load my belongings on their east coast Monday run. Being in no position to argue I paid. I never received an invoice for this payment or a receipt. Once again they went dark on me for over a week when I sent an e.mail threatening RCMP involvement they eventually get hold of me through customer care ( a joke name I think ) who informed me that the next east coast run was the following week and I would receive my belongings on or before the 15th Dec and the driver would call me with a time and day for delivery.

On the 15th my belongings arrived but my distress was still not over, the driver demanded a further $400 to unload because he had to climb some steps to get into the house and couldn’t unload until I paid. The first piece unloaded was a broken beyond repair bookcase.

So, the end result of this very distressing and depressing relocation was as follows. Over $8000 which was over twice the quote, several broken items which were not covered by insurance because I packed them myself all but in proper moving boxes, numerous pieces of damaged furniture which weren’t covered because of a $500 deductible and a whole month of worry, anger and frustration without my belongings during which time I slept on an air bed, sat on a Zero gravity lawn chair and cooked minimalist meals on what ever was available. I did have a small TV and my lap top so wasn’t totally without entertainment. Thank god I didn’t stay in a pet friendly hotel as I would have been out around another 4 or 5 grand. So would I recommend Roadways Moving and Storage or it’s sister companies for a relocation, not even when hell freezes over.
