I recently moved some furniture from my place outside of Ottawa to my brother's place in Toronto. I did a search online and filled in a form that sent my request to a number of movers. The first one to call back was Roadway Moving, aka Roadway Movers aka Move me again (I would suggest they add a "Never" before "Move"). The price was too good to be true and that should have warned me right there. I don't know what possessed me not to do some research on the company, but I guess I was really eager to get rid of the furniture before Christmas.

I don't want to go on too long, but what I will say is that after we had our furniture moved and before the furniture was delivered, the price increase was close to 5 times the original quote - from about $700 with tax to $3200 with tax. The claim from Lauren in accounting was that the movers apparently told me that our furniture was more than 2000 pounds (didn't happen) and that I agreed to go with a price based on a weight of 7000 pounds. My copy of the form says "72" - not sure what that means - maybe the mover started to write 7000 and then changed his mind. I have no idea. But when Lauren sent me the original copy by email, it showed 7000 and the "7" was definitely different than the one on my copy, so someone filled it in later. That began a back and forth with a very nasty Lauren. Eventually I told Lauren that as long as we could pay after the delivery, we would pay the $3200, just to get the furniture. Apparently that wasn't good enough - she demanded payment ahead and eventually she hiked the price up to $5450.

I contacted BBB, CAM and provincial and federal fraud organizations. CAM referred us to a terrific lawyer and we were starting a process, but eventually we managed to settle with Mindy (who may or may not have been Lauren - guess I'll never know now) on $3200 paid in advance. I figured if we never heard from them again, we'd already started a legal process and would just carry on with it.

As it was, the movers brought the furniture a couple of days after we paid them their hostage money. My sister-in-law told me that the movers were polite and the furniture was okay, except for a couple inconsequential items.

I know from the lawyer that there are many suits proceeding against this company.

This has been the worst experience.

Estimated cost was 7 thousand. The end price was 13,500 That was the best part of this. The movers broke things and said that they were already broken. They demanded cash because there were stairs. Sent a bill for 10,900. then told me that wasn't tax included days later. They were supposed to come the following day and pick up the remainder of things and didn't show up. I had to leave things behind.They then tell me that there is a holding fee if I can't come up with every penny before the drop off. Then they say that they can't take over a thousand on a credit card. Then they can't take a credit card at all unless you put it in their hands. Then MEGAN lied. About everything. Good GOD, please don't use this company.

They failed to show up on Saturday contacting me after 2 hours and telling me that their truck was malfunctioning. They offered a discount to arrange the moving on the following day. Well, after waiting an hour I had a heart stroke and booked another company. 3 days stranded. Oh, they called me after 2 hours saying they were running late due to another delivery. Well, too late! I booked another company! Call customers next time if you're running late. Still struggling to return the deposit.. (BTW another company was 4 hours late, but that's another story).

All positive reviews are fake. Trust all the one star reviews you see! They are total scammers and will take your stuff and not return it until you pay an outrageous amount of money. Studio-one bedroom: 2500-5000. Two bedroom: 5000-8000. Three bedroom: 10k to 14k. No exception. Just rent a uhaul and move for couple hundreds of dollars. If you’re a victim please report them on www.antifraudcentre.ca or to CRA (since they only take cash or e transfer there must’ve been tax evasion).
