Long-distance move from Redding, CA to New Hope, PA

Traumatic Experience - DO NOT USE!!! Full details below

We moved our 6+ bedroom home from CA to PA. We first interacted with Nationwide in late 2021 for a June 2022 move.

The first estimate from Nationwide based on my communication of items was approx. $8,000. We paid deposit to secure the transaction after I double checked that the company was legitimate; I was told they are not a broker which increased my confidence. I assumed the price would go up once we had a more accurate list of boxes etc but figured the level of service with a moving company plus 30 days free storage would be really helpful.

One week before move Nationwide called and I updated actual boxes, sizes and all items to move. Price jumped to $14,000+ due to increase in sq.ft of our now-packed boxes and increase in fuel surcharge (11% of total). I was shocked but understood. Our deposit increased to total $5,005.83.

Day of move a company turned up with TWO U-HAUL trucks and three young men. It was a different company and I was informed that Nationwide were in fact a broker and this new company was contracted to move our goods across the country. I was to pay them the balance directly. This raised my anxiety but I was now fully packed with family waiting to leave and I had already paid a deposit of $5k.

Next the new company (Movers and Packers Relocation Specialists, NJ) assessed quantity differently - from how much of the truck space we used, not how much items/boxes/sq.foot we supplied to Nationwide. Movers told me to check the UHaul trucks website to see the square footage and proceeded to fill up both trucks.

Movers then said it was 3,000 sq.ft and the price was now $22,000!!!

I disagreed saying that I checked the Uhaul website and the stated area was 1682 sq.ft plus 1016 sq.foot = 2698 sq.foot. Movers very unhappy saying that we pay for the space including what we don't use. I said, then it should be LESS than 2698 sq.foot. The two young men who packed the trucks looked like they were doing it for the first time and had not packed the truck very well (LOTS of spare space above our boxes etc). I refused to sign the contract. Movers was not happy and called his office. He came back and adjusted the sq.ft from 3000 down to 2716 (he rounded the bigger truck UP to 1700 sq.ft). This reduced the cost by a couple thousand dollars now totaling $20,638.44.

I was informed that these two trucks would go to a depot and our goods put on a bigger truck to travel across the country to another depot (New Jersey) then delivered to us in the same way it was collected.

Our search for a new home took longer than planned so we informed Movers on June 27 of our new delivery location and first available date to move being July 29. In my email I communicated that we would need extra storage and was informed this would cost 40c per cubic foot. I had no other choice.

Two days before our move I called Movers asking about delivery. Movers said they saw my name and address on the board for that date but no actual delivery date yet. They stated that they had 30 days to deliver our goods from the first stated available move in day. This was a shock and difficult to communicate to my family who had been living from a suitcase for the previous month and a half. Movers said again they have 30 days and will call two days before they move in. I pushed for more information trying to at least know a timeframe so that we could plan. Movers said they would talk to dispatch and get back to me.

Nationwide was helpful and apologetic and said they would contact Movers on my behalf and sort out the storage (30 days would result in another months payment) and get more information. Nationwide called me back one hour later confirming the above and that they would deliver within a week or I could negotiate to pickup my own goods. Nationwide said that Movers would call me within in the hour. Nationwide also said to keep them informed and that this company is one of their BEST CARRIERS and possibly our individual experience.

SIX HOURS later I had not heard from Movers, so I called Nationwide. I was informed that Movers would be calling me with a solution.

TWO days later I called Movers and they had no information. Later the same day Movers called to say that our goods would be arriving the NEXT day in the morning.

Next day ONE TRUCK turned up with three people. They would not unpack until I paid (on the day wire transfer) the full amount - even though we were still missing "one pallet" of our goods. They were more professional than the people who picked up our goods and were wearing company t shirts. They proceeded to unpack our goods (standing on boxes to reach other boxes in the truck) and we could see crushed boxes in the truck. There's also water and mold damage to multiple items including irreplaceable personal momentos. My family is heartbroken. There are multiple broken and damaged items - wagon wheels, desks, table, mattress with black smudges and more. We were also delivered a king mattress that is not ours.

Long-distance move from Snohomish, WA to North Las Vegas, NV

Don't use this company. Total rip-off and scam!!!

I moved from Seattle to Las Vegas. They upsold me the day of my move, leaving me no options but to pay an extra $5000.00 or they were going to walk away. I had to be out of my home since the new owners were moving in the following day. Then when they delivered my furniture, they damaged over 20k in furniture and belongings. Even the driver and crew that unloaded my furniture kept apologizing and said that this is common. When I filed a claim, I was offered only $126.00.

This is a total joke. Please take my advice and don't get burned.

Long-distance move from Littleton, CO to New Kent, VA

One big scam

Our stuff has been stolen, but at least they brought all the broken stuff. And nationwide refuses to take responsibility for the subcontractor they hired who completely destroyed our nest egg. Bank accounts and all. Don't get scammed like we did. And my husband's dying and I'm pregnant. If they don't mind stealing from us they will steal from you too.

Long-distance move from Sandy, UT to Loganville, GA

Fraud!

Move was scheduled to be completed on Thursday September 8th, as we had sold our home and the new owners were taking possession of it on Friday the 9th. When the movers (Maxsimus Van Lines, Nationwide sub-contractor) finally left us on the 8th, we had a garage full of items that would not fit on the first truck. Rami(MVL) then proceeded to “offer” us a second truck, which would arrive on Friday. The charge for this truck was an additional $7,000, computed at $11.60 per cf, not the $6.59 guaranteed by our quote from Nationwide. i.e. – the final amount paid to MVL was $30,488, or 282% higher than the original quote given to us by Nationwide. Damaged items too numerous to mention. The name "Maxsimus" does not even match the truck DOT #. Now a month and 20-30 e-mails and phone calls later, and NO action taken yet by Nationwide.

Long-distance move from Texas to Florida

Overall good experience

So I will say that everytime I have moved in the past I have had a really bad experience with uhaul ands pods. I had a had a great experience from start to finish. My initial call I spoke with Matt who had done a great job explaining the industry to me. After booking early,, I had got a really outstanding rate for a all inclusive move. When the movers got here it went exactly exactly how Matt said it would go. The customer service department was very responsive as well. Thank you NW & storage

Long-distance move from Phoenix, AZ to Miami, FL

Excellent service

I had a really good experience and conversation with my original sales rep but what really makes this move stand out from all the others is the outstanding customer service. I know I might have been a little hassle at times but they really do take the time to explain the process. The move took place 2 weeks ago and they just moved me in. I would highly recommend them to anyone who is moving. I would give more than 5 stars if I could
