Cross Country Moving & Storage

I contacted Cross Country Moving and Storage out of Rockville, Md Phone 800 755 6581 for a move and ask for a 28 foot truck, seeing that is what I had to move to salem about 3 years ago for about $2300 from Erie to salem. I packed and loaded the container at that time. I explain to Paul Suuivan I was no longer in the condition to do so and needed a complete moving job, which included packing loading and unloading. I was assured the cost would be $3358 and than would be no extra charges. When the driver came in, he quoted $100000 for the move, My wife had 80% of the item packed. He dropped the price to $6000. I told him to get lost. But was over ridden by my wife. When I left the room the driver demanded $500 before he would start loading the truck. That made the cost of the move to $6500. Than the fun began. The driver called the next day that he would be at the apartment a 5 pm the same day July 14 or the day after the move. He didn't show up. The main office gave us the run a round and the driver would not answer the many calls. My daughter called the SC State Police. We than got a call on Sunday July 15 and was told he would be there at 8 AM He did not show up until approx. . 11:30 demanding another $2000 that would have made the cost $8500 from the $3358 that I was quoted. My son refused to give him the extra money. Remember this is all cash. My daughter had to jump in front of the truck to stop him from driving off with my belongings as she called the police. They were there in 3 minutes and forced the driver to unload the truck. And told us it was a civil matter and we had to give him the $3420 to bring my cost up to the $6500. The driver refused to give us a receipt. The police force him to. Our belonging ended up on a hill side out in the open with a threat of rain, which it did. Thanks for good neighbors in the towers, which is a 45 unit complex we got our belongings inside with very little rain damage.
I did call the Federal Department of Transportation and the Federal Trade Commission and filed a complaint Plus the states Attorney generals in SC and Pa.
The reason I hired this company, The Rockville BBB gave it a A+ rating. What a
joke.
They did not load all of my belongings, After they said they would.

TL;DR: This company is essentially a fraudulent outfit. DO NOT USE. Read on for more details: They lie about how much the move will cost from the get-go (TONS OF HIDDEN CHARGES). Their pricing model is pegged to cubic feet of space your move requires and they lie about how much space your stuff took up (PADDING THE REAL NUMBER BY 30-40%) which will cause significant overages and a higher $/cu ft rate than if the belongings came in under their initial cu ft estimate. They have an unprofessional/thuggish crew that MANHANDLES your stuff and gives you an attitude if you tell them to be careful, and they demand payment on delivery BEFORE YOU GET TO INSPECT ANY ITEMS - even BEFORE UNLOADING. Broke my $2000 TV (screen shattered into 6-7 pieces), $600 mirror, despite me paying an extra $200 EACH for "proper" packaging. They gave a move quote for $2500 initially. Total move cost, not including broken stuff - $15000!! No, unfortunately there are no typos in that figure. They lost furniture hardware, scratched countless amounts of furniture, damaged artwork. Thuggish crew had the audacity to ask for a 15% tip after giving me a bill that was 6x what I was quoted (saying, and I quote "scratch my back and I'll scratch yours" - I.e. give me a tip and i'll knock some $ off the bill). DONT FALL for the fake-nice salesperson that gives you their cellphone for any issues -they will simply IGNORE you when there is a problem - be it CALL/TEXT/VOICEMAIL/EMAIL. Their "white glove" packing service is a SHAM - you'll be running around reminding the crew of stuff they forgot to pack, and be packing your own car with stuff because they'll charge you an arm and a leg for packing material (FULL PACKING apparently only means packing labor and NO packing material). $9 for a roll of tape to just give you a taste (oh and they'll charge you for countless half used rolls of tape). The SHUTTLE that NEEDS to come to your house/apartment because you don't live on a highway rest area (really the only areas they say are accessible by an 18 wheeler) - they'll charge you $1 PER CUBE on the pickup AND DELIVERY. I climbed into the delivery truck once they emptied all my stuff and measured it as 1100 cu ft - they charged me for 1500 cubic ft, so I paid $3000 on top of the initial $2500 estimate just for this "shuttle"..when the salesperson told me NO CHARGE for the shuttle. When I questioned the salesperson about what the contract said - they said to NOT TO WORRY - no charge for the shuttle. This business is clearly run by conniving, all-around bad persons who have designed the ENTIRE PROCESS CAREFULLY to SCREW people out of money at a busy time in their lives. They also structure contract language (and the timing of the signing of the contract) to protect themselves against all the above behavior. DO NOT USE UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. I could go on forever about my disastrous experience with this scam of an outfit. Think of a nightmare move scenario and Cross Country Moves will make sure to hit on all the key points and then some. I'd give negative 10 stars if I could. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.

THIS COMPANY operates on lies (verbal). I was in the middle of a move across country (PLEASE TAKE THE TIME TO READ) and was looking for bids. When you search reviews, you find ok things until you dig about this company. They were the first ones to call with a bid. I went over all my stuff (which they classify as small cabinets to low bid you) and was given an estimate. I called around and everyone else was higher and a week later for a delivery date. I should have known better. Errol was my original bidder, never could get a hold of him again because they screen their calls with caller ID. How do I know? Because we called 15 times with in 4 hours and they never answered but we called from a friends cell phone and they picked right up. The next step right before the move was a walk around via phone. The same stuff cost $2300.00more to move. It's ok they tell you because you will get a refund. Yea never happended, oh and they were a week late just like all the other moving companies stated. THESE PEOPLE ARE BROKERS. They will tell you whatever you want to hear to sucker you in. I stupidly signed a contract but its pretty shady they prey on people moving and on time deadlines Annie the manager said she would review the recorded calls about my 1 week promise date.
