Long-distance move from Powhatan, VA to Murrells Inlet, SC

Our move in October with Regency, from Virginia to South Carolina.

First, let me say that their 3-man crew (Jesse, Percy & Darrell) were the very best moving crew we've ever had -- very professional, hard-working & personable with not a single incident of damage. We would give THEM 5 stars. The reason for the low rating we’re giving Regency was that the quote was grossly underestimated and when the actual/final weight came in, we were stunned at the difference in cost. We were quoted a price of $3,190 for an estimated 7,000 lbs. (everything fitting in a 26' truck). The actual weight ended up being 11,000 lbs. and the bill presented to us was for $5,129 - nearly $2,000 MORE than we’d been told!! In making our decision in the first place, we'd gotten about 5 quotes and narrowed it down to 2 of the companies with whom we were most impressed. The other (runner-up) company’s estimate did estimate the actual weight correctly (11,000 lbs.) with a quote of $4,320. So – if we’d known that Regency was going to underestimate and charge so much more for the 11,000 lb. weight, we would have contracted with the other company – which would have saved us about $800. When the Regency estimator called us with the final charge amount, the night before delivery, (so that we could get a cashier’s check in that amount the next morning, to give the driver before they unloaded) I was shocked. When I asked her why the weight had been so grossly underestimated, her only response was that we had added a couple of things. It’s true, we did add a couple of things we’d originally thought would not go, but we’d traded them out for other things that had been previously included when she made her estimate. (Even the driver acknowledged that the 2 pieces that we’d added wouldn’t have made that much difference in the weight anyway.) During our phone conversation, she just kept repeating “That’s what the actual weight was”. When I told her how unhappy we were about it and that the other mover had estimated the weight correctly – and asked how she could have been so far off, she said “Well, didn’t that difference raise a ‘red flag’ for you?” I was flabbergasted at that and told her that WE weren’t the experts – and that the reason we’d chosen Regency was because of the professional impression they’d given us when making their estimate. Of course at that point, there's nothing you can do to fight it when all your belongings are in the truck and you have to pay them before they unload. Needless to say we’re terribly unhappy about this and would hope that this isn’t a common practice with this company. You hear about this sort of thing happening and I would warn anyone getting estimates from any company to be really careful and take whatever safeguards may be available to prevent this from happening.
