Stay away from American Van Lines

If you, or anyone you know is considering a move, stay far away from Brian Maguire and American Van Lines.

Due to this company's repeated willful negligence, what should have been a simple 3-day local move stretched over 10 days, stranding my family without access to basic necessities for a week.

To give you a sense of the absurdity... on Day 1 of the move, they assigned a 3-person crew instead of the contractually promised 5-person crew to pack our home. AND dispatched this crew to the wrong address and city! As a result, the crew arrived at the origin only in the afternoon, and was able to work for only 3 hours. Day 2 wasn’t much better, as the same 3-person crew (instead of 5-person) arrived at 11am, and worked for only 5 hours. Our reserved window at the loading dock was over, while not a single box or furniture piece had left the origin. And they could not come back for another week.

Most frustrating about this situation was that their dispatching and “move management” team was completely clueless and wholly unhelpful throughout the ordeal and failed to address the situation in a timely manner, even though the issues were reported in real time, both by us and their moving crew.

Brian Maguire, who sold us the move package, was out of office during those two days (no prior notice to us), and did not provide the details of a person covering for him during his absence. Our repeated attempts to get in touch with a decision maker went unanswered.

The damages caused by their negligence were substantial. We never received an explanation, apology or compensation for our trouble. The only thing that was offered to us was a $350 payment if we agreed to sign a non-disparagement agreement. The fact that they have someone ready to offer these documents indicates to me that they do this ALL THE TIME!

Find a trustworthy and reliable moving company - American Van Lines is not it.

Company is a giant scam

It took a month for our belongings to be delivered with no communication from the company. Upon delivery our brand new washer, brand new dryer, my husband’s brand new tool box along with thousands of dollars worth of new tools were all “lost in transit”, among many, many other items. No one will answer or return our calls now to file a claim. We received other people’s belongings as well. I’m so exhausted from dealing with this company. We’ve lost so much money from this whole ordeal, I fully, fully regret going with this company. We were robbed.

All American Van Lines Did an exceptional job.

I just moved and used All American Van Lines to move me. They know what they're doing and they're quick about it. Services range from packing for you and moving you and unpacking to simply moving. It's much cheaper to pack yourself. You pay by the hour and of course will have to pay for all the materials they use. I don't know how costly it would've been if they packed me, since I did 90% of the packing myself.

Awful experience don't use this company

I moved from Philadelphia pa to Virginia Beach spent $3000 had a terrible experience. They broke so many things like my 60" tv & my vacuum which I can't replace. They broke my lamp and a shelf unit. Among many other things. They offered me $200 to accommodate all they broke with agreement to not share my experience, which I did not take. They left couch standing straight up in the middle of living room. They had boxes inside my wardrobe boxes n sealed shut. The driver was trying to force me to give him $600 extra dollars from the moment he started to load my items on truck. He asked in several ways including telling me to tip them each $200 I was afraid to say no because they had all my belongings. Not even furniture was put in correct rooms n I had no one to help me do that because I moved by myself to new state. The agent that was so helpful before I paid the $3000 I could not get in touch with on moving day or for some time after. I strongly suggest finding another moving company as this one was a nightmare. I will share my experience with as many people as I can to save anyone else from going through what I did with all American van lines!

Terrible Company

This is the most unprofessional company I have ever used, not only did the price of my quote double upon arrival, when about 2 thirds of my stuff arrived, about a week and a half past the date it was due to be delivered, a single guy unloaded it and nothing got unpacked, unwrapped, not even my mattress was brought in from garage. It's now more than 2 weeks past the delivery date and I am still missing a third of my stuff and half my babies crib. No response from Emails, calls, messages. Worst company ever. And don't pay them until you get all your stuff because once you do you won't hear from them again. And when you do you get an attitude and told to call back tomorrow, which is when they won't answer during business hours.

Scam arists.

These guys are absolute crooks. I would never ever recommend using them. They claimed they couldn't get the truck in my driveway so they would need to charge me $500 extra to rent a pickup truck to drive my 8 boxes and 4 pieces of furniture to my door. I live on a culdesac and have a flat paved driveway. Needless to say, they wanted to hold my 8 boxes hostage unless I paid them (cash preferred).  Of course, they were then magically able to put my few items on a dolly and wheel them down my driveway which took them less than 30 seconds. These guys are total crooks, dishonest and should be avoided at all costs.

Terrible Moving Experience.

Don't be deceived - unfortunately we were totally deceived, not knowing much about the ins and outs about moving, packing, etc. We used Mayflower and United Van Lines in our previous two moves through company relocations and didn't have much to complain about during both moves. Since this time we were relocating with our own money we decided to check online to get the cheapest quotes. The broker company, All American Van Lines (AAVL), was by far the cheapest. In the end, it was too good to be true. A horrible experience is to put it lightly.

Price match? Not possible at AAVL since they calculate quotes (online) by square feet (the amount of space your stuff takes up) and all other companies generate quotes via weight. I told them I have 8000 lbs based on our previous move. They told me this is approximately 1200ft2 (way off!!). Once the truck was loaded it was determined our stuff took up 2900ft2. Our original quote was for ~$3400. Once the truck was loaded the floor manager wanted to charge $10,000. After arguing for several hours we got the price down to $6500. Talking to the floor manager was like talking to a rock. He didn't budge until we threatened to have them take all our stuff out of the truck.

The online site claims they want 60% of the money at pick-up and the remainder at the destination. We were forced to give over 80% at pick-up. Another unexpected event.

Upfront we told them we may need at least 2 or 3 months of storage. They offered 1 free month which was nice; however, during our free month period the floor manager called 3 times a week to see when we would be ready for our stuff. He called 3 times before 6AM and a couple times late evening 9-10PM. At the end of the free month he made the decision to send our stuff across country before we were ready. Obviously, we were very upset and called him. His answer was, "what's taking you so long to find a place?" He continually tried to blame us for his poor decisions. Thus, we had to scramble to find a place for our stuff. Then he said he would call before the driver leaves. The next thing we know, the driver calls and says he'll be at our destination tomorrow and needs an address. Who does business like this?

Luckily we found a place in time to coordinate with the driver. Once the truck arrived I couldn't believe how they stacked our furniture. It was a complete mess. They had no respect for our stuff. Even the local mover guys they hired to help the driver couldn't believe how terribly they assorted the boxes and furniture. Needless to say, much of our stuff was damaged and some was missing. In addition, there were items (big items like a mattress and 5x5 mirror) in their truck that did not even belong to us. They don't take inventory of anything as it comes off the truck. We had to argue with them to set up our beds and other furniture once in our home - something that was in the original contract.

Most places want the money at the end of the job. These guys refused to unload the truck until they had all the money.

When unloading the truck I noticed a box that was partially opened and broken items were coming out. When I confronted him, he just shrugged his shoulders and said, "it's not my problem". Terrible customer service!

These guys are Arabic. Besides their thick accent, they would not listen to anything my wife said - as in many Arabic cultures, women don't have much authority. My wife has a Type A personality and this was very frustrating. I don't mean to sound racist, but this is reality and it was very offensive for my wife and myself.

As for the sales guy, Michael, - watch out. Remember he's in sales. He seems like the friendliest guy you'd ever talk to, but once the move was done and the money was in their hand, his customer service ended and refused to provide us any help or get us in touch with upper management to voice our complaint. He never returned our messages and followed through with our requests. Terrible customer service!!

Overall - Terrible customer service from the top to bottom!! Terrible, stressful moving experience compared to our experience with other companies. My advice - pay more and use a company that will come to your home and give an in-house quote and offer a "not to exceed maximum" like North American Van Lines did. We should've gone with North American - it would have saved us time, gray hairs, and lots of money.

Long-distance move from Florida to New Jersey

Horrible!! The Worst Moving Exprience Ever!!

We hired All American Van Lines to move our home from Boca Raton Florida to Parsippany, NJ on June 20, 2013. The move was supposed to take place on July 22, 2013. After speaking with a woman named Talli the date was changed to Wednesday, July 31. Tali had walked our home in June with my husband and gave a price for moving to my husband but the day of the move there was not an inventory list so they insisted on charging us over 700.00 in additional fees.  We were under the impression that there was to be 1 tuck with 1 crew From Florida to NJ.  That was not the case. They also showed up with a truck that was ½ the size of what was needed to move the entire contents of my home. This was a long distance move and I was supposed to be on the road after the movers were finished however because they did not have the appropriate truck I did not want my items moved more than once since I had many items that needed to be handled with care and only wanted it moved once which I made clear to Liran who was there that day. They were supposed to arrive between 8 and 10 am. They did not arrive till 1:30 and started wrapping things but did not load that small truck. I postponed my road trip 1 day, as they were to come back the next day to load the truck. When they showed up the next day they were there with that same truck. Had they told me that they were unable to handle my move due to their truck being in the shop I would have cancelled with them and hired someone who was capable of handling my move. We were never told that our contents would be moved again to a warehouse and stored. We did not request out contents to be moved several times before heading to NJ. I was to be out of the home in Florida 7/29/2013 however this company did not finish loading the wrong truck until Saturday August 3rd causing added expenses on my part and undue duress. I did leave on Thursday because I had to be in NJ and my father who lives in Florida went to the house daily to deal with the movers. They told me they were professional movers capable of handling my baby grand piano and I came to find out that this company hired people off the street for my move. They moved my things to their warehouse and stored it there without my permission. Due to the mishandling of the move when my things finally arrived in NJ on August 13, 2013 a majority of my furniture and things were broken. We took numerous pictures of how the truck was just piled up with no regard to fragile stickers or this side up stickers.  The driver made the trip alone and picked up workers off the side of the road from Newark and Jersey City. The driver showed up at 5pm to unload and was here until 2am. Was totally inconvenient and disrespectful to our neighbors.  One of the workers gave me his name and number so he could explain how horribly my stuff was treated on the truck and what happened.   The damages include 2 broken Tiffany floor lamps   1 damaged marble table. Could not be put back together because the wooden base was broken   My bar table was missing the pedestal to put it together   Most boxes were crushed leaving fine china, glasses, and plates broken   Broken glass picture frame   My couch has a broken frame   My love seat is missing the legs   My bbq grill did not show up   My Outdoor planters did not show up   My winter coats did not show up. The movers put them in wardrobe boxes   My son’s suits in the same wardrobe box as the coats from the same closet   My dogs pee pad did not show up   My stereo receiver was totally crushed in   My Bookshelves were busted   Metal bakers rack bent in   Parts to my husband’s desk are missing so he is unable to put the whole thing together.   They took furniture apart in Florida and lost the screws so when it arrived in NJ not able to put it together properly. (My glass TV table was put together and we discovered later on there was nothing holding the glass on. Screws are missing as well as the glass being chipped.   Many other pieces of furniture have nicks and chips from the way they moved and packed our contents several times with no care or concern.           Because it got so late much of my things were just offloaded from the truck and not put back in the proper places. The driver refused to place my refrigerator in the house.  They left furniture everywhere in my downstairs that we had to move again into its proper place.   They were totally unprofessional and irresponsible with my belongings and did not do what our signed agreement stated they would do.                    .

Local move within Hollywood, FL

Reckless, Unreliable, Unreachable, WORST company ever.

NEVER USE THIS COMPANY. They damaged our belongings, were extremely unsanitary, didn't follow any rules, had our stuff in a truck with gross furniture from other people's houses, not a single person available to help if a problem comes up.

They gave me a "definitive time frame" of pickup for 10-12 AM. The movers arrived at 1 PM. It was communicated that we had reserved the elevator in our new building from 1-5 PM. Our building has strict rules, which were provided several weeks in advance, & again right before the move.

The movers arrived in an oversized truck when it was specifically conveyed that our building did NOT allow trucks over 11'.

I was surprised to find that I was unable to reach my moving coordinator/"definitive contact" at the time I needed them most. I asked the lead mover (who had no response to the situation) to call his boss. His boss said the only thing we could do is rent a u-haul another day & reschedule the move. This is obviously NOT POSSIBLE. We were being kicked out of our apartment. The mover offered no ideas to resolve the issue. When I asked to please speak with the boss, he told me the boss doesn't want to talk to me.

I had to call the condo association, who I already signed off with on the fact that the move-in would be in accordance with their very strict rules. I had to beg them to let us use the oversize truck & extend the elevator reservation, as the combination of the movers showing up late & the time it took for US to INDEPENDENTLY coordinate the resolution to this dilemma ended up significantly cutting into our reserved time.

Because we were now super pressed for time, we ended up having to do half the work ourselves. We wrapped most of the items ourselves, carried our belongings down the stairs, helped them out a lot. Paying top dollar for movers should not end up in us having to do half the work. Meanwhile, this should have been the easiest move, as we had everything organized & moved a lot of our stuff out prior to the move.

After resuming the move, we noticed the oversize truck was filled with other people's stuff. This is extremely unsanitary. How can you put people's things from different apartments/houses in the same truck? What if the other people have bed bugs? Or roaches? Now ALL of our belongings have been exposed to this. This is unacceptable, & should be basic common sense. If this is their unconventional procedure, this should have been disclosed this from the beginning or else we never would have worked with them.

Several items were damaged during the move, including our expensive television, which was one of the only things we didn't have a hand at packing ourselves. The lightbulb in our lamp was missing & not returned. It was probably forgotten by accident, but that should be basic procedure - if you are going to take apart items, return all their parts at the end. The bottoms of two of our filing cabinets were damaged & the feet were missing. To name just a few. Additionally, some of the baseboard carpet in the hallway of the building was damaged.

If my definitive contact/moving coordinator was going to be out of the office, why would they not tell me, & assign me to someone else. If this was a smooth, flawless operation, it may not have been a big deal. But it was not. It was a HOT MESS. If we did not take action ourselves, the whole move would not have happened, & we would have been completely screwed.

They already caused issues even before the move, by neglecting to send the necessary licenses/certificates of insurance to our association which were required to reserve the move. Again, we had to find that out ourselves by confirming with the association who said they never heard anything from you. We were super lucky that a spot opened up on Monday & we were able to use the elevator.

The day after the move, I expressed my concerns to the company.. Called. Emailed. Left messages. NO ONE EVER responded. I tried to dispute the charge with my CC company. They ONLY replied to the credit card company & STILL never to me. NEVER USE THEM. EVER.
