Others store enough energy to power appliances for hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You have probably not given it a second thought during your moving preparations, but:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Can your movers actually take all of them?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, some moving companies can transport lithium batteries and battery-powered devices, but acceptance depends on the battery\u2019s size, condition, how it is installed, applicable DOT rules, and the mover\u2019s own policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lithium batteries are regulated as hazardous materials when transported commercially in the United States, so additional transportation requirements may apply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This article primarily relates to U.S. federal transportation rules. That&#8217;s exactly what makes them useful, and what can make them dangerous when something goes wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.phmsa.dot.gov\/lithiumbatteries\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The U.S. Department of Transportation&#8217;s Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA)<\/a> classifies lithium batteries as hazardous materials when they are transported in commerce. The agency notes that they can present both electrical and chemical hazards and may overheat or ignite because of damage, short circuits, manufacturing defects, or other problems. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In rare cases, a lithium-ion battery can enter <a href=\"https:\/\/ul.org\/research-updates\/what-is-thermal-runaway\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">thermal runaway<\/a>; a chain reaction in which the battery rapidly generates heat and can release flammable gases or ignite. Lithium-ion batteries are generally required to have their Wh rating marked on the outside of the battery case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, if your mover asks how large your battery is, look for the <strong>Wh<\/strong> figure on the unit or in the manufacturer&#8217;s specifications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 100 Wh Rule: Does It Apply to Moving Trucks?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is important to know because the <strong>100 Wh figure is commonly misunderstood<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is used in several transportation rules and exceptions, particularly for smaller lithium-ion batteries.
