Because of my English accent, not because I had outstayed my welcome, you understand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I have moved around a lot during my adult life, so I was surprisingly stuck for an answer. I realized I have no idea where home, in the traditional sense, actually is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most people would probably say home is where you were raised. But how could somewhere I left 45 years ago still automatically qualify?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Perhaps it is the country you were born in. Not for me. I have no intention of ever going back there to live.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Where your children live? Impossible. I have none.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Where you feel understood? A relationship. A bigger house. Lower living costs. Better weather. Retirement. Schools. Adventure. A fresh start.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All perfectly understandable reasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But sometimes underneath the practical explanation there is another, much harder feeling to put into words:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maybe life will feel more right there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That may be why certain places have such a hold over us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We see a village by the sea and imagine a slower, happier version of ourselves living there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We visit a city and can suddenly picture the life we might have if we stayed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We scroll through houses in another state, another region, or another country and start mentally arranging furniture in rooms we don&#8217;t own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We aren&#8217;t only imagining a different place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We are imagining a different life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And sometimes we imagine that somewhere out there everything will finally click into place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The place where we will think: Yes. This is it. Not simply <em>I belong here<\/em>, but <em>I like who I am here<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The difficulty is that eventually the new place stops being new.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The spectacular view becomes the thing outside the kitchen window. You know where everything is in the supermarket. You have opinions about the traffic. They were born there, their family is there, their history is there, and the idea of moving somewhere else makes absolutely no sense to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then there are those of us for whom moving doesn&#8217;t feel quite so extraordinary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A house can be sold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Boxes can be packed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another place can become familiar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Frequent movers aren&#8217;t necessarily searching for home. Some simply enjoy change. Some value freedom more than roots. You miss it. Therefore you are homesick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Except I&#8217;m not convinced it is always the place we are missing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes we think we&#8217;re homesick for a place when we&#8217;re actually homesick for a time, a person, or a version of our life that no longer exists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may think you desperately miss the house where everyone gathered at Christmas. That road is where you learned to drive. That school is where your children went. That house belonged to your grandparents. Photographs. Books you refuse to throw away despite moving them across three countries and never opening them. The ridiculous ornament that somehow survives every clear-out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Food travels well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So do habits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The way you celebrate Christmas. The music you put on while cooking. Expressions nobody around you uses. The meal you make when somebody is ill. The phone call you make every Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pieces of different places start collecting around you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And without really noticing, you begin creating home rather than finding it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That may be what people who move frequently eventually learn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your entire sense of belonging depends on the coordinates beneath your feet, every move removes it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But if some of it belongs to you &#8211; your routines, your relationships, your memories, your ability to create familiarity &#8211; then moving doesn&#8217;t necessarily mean starting again from nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You take more with you than fits into the boxes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Maybe_Home_Isnt_Somewhere_We_Find\">Maybe Home Isn&#8217;t Somewhere We Find<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-aspectratio=\"1024\/660\" width=\"1024\" height=\"660\" data-src=\"https:\/\/moveadvisor.com\/move\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Home-isnt-somewhere-we-find-1024x660.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-48400 lazyload\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/moveadvisor.com\/move\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Home-isnt-somewhere-we-find-1024x660.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/moveadvisor.com\/move\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Home-isnt-somewhere-we-find-300x193.jpg 300w, https:\/\/moveadvisor.com\/move\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Home-isnt-somewhere-we-find-768x495.jpg 768w, https:\/\/moveadvisor.com\/move\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Home-isnt-somewhere-we-find-1536x990.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/moveadvisor.com\/move\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Home-isnt-somewhere-we-find.jpg 1562w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>There is a romantic idea that everybody has a place somewhere in the world where they truly belong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some people may have exactly that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They walk into a city, a village, a house, or even a country and immediately recognize something. Years later they are still there and cannot imagine wanting to be anywhere else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Good for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But I&#8217;m no longer convinced the rest of us have somehow failed to locate ours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There doesn&#8217;t have to be one perfect place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A person can belong in several places, differently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can love somewhere without needing to stay forever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Leaving somewhere doesn&#8217;t invalidate the years when it genuinely was home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And those of us who keep moving aren&#8217;t necessarily trying to find somewhere better. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes we are simply comfortable with the idea that home can change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is freedom in no longer demanding that one geographical location provides every sense of belonging we need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because if we spend our lives waiting for a place to make us feel settled, secure, understood, and complete, we may be asking too much of a zip code.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Home may ultimately have less to do with where we are and more to do with what we have managed to build around, and within, ourselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Which brings me back to that apparently simple question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Do_I_ever_go_home?\">Do I ever go home?<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-aspectratio=\"1024\/660\" width=\"1024\" height=\"660\" data-src=\"https:\/\/moveadvisor.com\/move\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Is-home-a-place-1-1024x660.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-48401 lazyload\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/moveadvisor.com\/move\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Is-home-a-place-1-1024x660.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/moveadvisor.com\/move\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Is-home-a-place-1-300x193.jpg 300w, https:\/\/moveadvisor.com\/move\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Is-home-a-place-1-768x495.jpg 768w, https:\/\/moveadvisor.com\/move\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Is-home-a-place-1-1536x990.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/moveadvisor.com\/move\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Is-home-a-place-1.jpg 1562w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>For years I assumed that because I had moved so many times, I could no longer identify where home was.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now I live somewhere that feels right. I am happy, content, and settled, and I never intend to move again, although I have said that before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So yes, I think I am home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What I am less certain about is why.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Did I finally find the right place, with the right people and a culture in which I feel I belong?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Or did I stop expecting a place to provide the answer?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maybe home stops being a place when you realize you don&#8217;t actually have to find it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Somebody asked me the other day if I ever go home.
