But you stayed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most of us probably have something like this: a moving red line. Your home no longer works. You identify the problem. You move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But real life is rarely that simple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2025, 44% of people who sold a home told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zillow.com\/research\/sellers-housing-trends-report-2025-35674\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Zillow<\/a> that wanting to live somewhere else was part of their decision. Changes in family size, jobs, retirement, marriage, and divorce were also common reasons. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those are the people who actually moved. Far more interesting are the people who experienced many of the same changes but stayed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 The children leave, but their bedrooms remain unchanged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 A job changes, but the longer commute just becomes part of the routine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Parents age hundreds of miles away, and every visit ends with the same conversation about living closer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 The house slowly stops fitting the life being lived within it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet it never says on the kitchen pin board: <strong>TODAY IS THE DAY WE SHOULD MOVE.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because people adapt. They are built around routines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You know which grocery store has everything where you expect it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There is a neighbor who takes your packages in.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You know exactly how the neighborhood feels on a summer evening.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>None of those things appears on a real estate listing, but together they create something most of us value so much: familiarity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A 2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.redfin.com\/news\/june-homeownership-month-how-people-feel-about-home-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Redfin<\/a> survey gives us an idea of how deep that connection can become. Among homeowners surveyed, 74% said their home reflected who they are, 72% felt a sense of belonging in their neighborhood, and 71% had a neighbor they considered a friend. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That is why describing someone as simply \u201creluctant to move\u201d misses something important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Leaving can mean giving up hundreds of seemingly insignificant things that have accumulated over years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may be able to find a better house. The interesting part is what happens when <em>after<\/em> arrives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because another after often replaces it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The children graduate, but now it makes sense to wait until they settle somewhere.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Retirement arrives, but perhaps it is better to spend a year figuring things out.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The renovation gets finished, and now it seems strange to leave immediately after doing all that work.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>A temporary reason for staying can quickly become another five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is not normally anything irrational about one delay. But they are not the same reason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may realize that the commute, the spare bedrooms, or the winters matter far less than your neighbors, your routines, your garden, or having family nearby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may discover that, given the choice again today, you would still choose exactly where you are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That is useful to know too.
