We calculated how many working hours would be needed to earn one year\u2019s rent. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then we added commuting time using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/topics\/employment\/commuting.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Census Bureau mean travel times<\/a> to work. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For commuting, we assumed 240 commuting days per year and doubled the one-way Census commute figure to account for getting home again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Annual Life Cost = Hours Needed to Earn Rent + Hours Spent Commuting<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, there are individual differences. A remote worker may hardly ever commute. Someone earning considerably more than the local average will need fewer working hours to cover their rent. Someone earning less will need considerably more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This isn\u2019t meant to show you exactly how many hours <em>you personally<\/em> sacrifice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is a standardized way of asking something the usual affordability rankings never ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How expensive is a city when we measure the price in time instead of dollars?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And here\u2019s the terrifying part.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We haven\u2019t included groceries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We haven\u2019t included childcare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We haven\u2019t included healthcare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We haven\u2019t included the cost of your car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We haven\u2019t included restaurants, vacations, taxes, or that trip to Target where you went in for toothpaste and came out $137 poorer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is essentially the <strong>minimum Life Cost<\/strong> of keeping a roof over your head and getting to work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The latest available <a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/quickfacts\/fact\/table\/US\/PST045225\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Census QuickFacts<\/a> figures report median gross rents ranging from $1,361 in Houston to $2,476 in San Francisco among the cities we compared, while commute times can be as high as 40.3 minutes one way in New York City. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may also like to read: <a href=\"\/move\/rising-property-taxes-when-it-makes-sense-to-stay-and-when-it-may-be-time-to-move\/\">Rising Property Taxes<\/a>. Commute calculation assumes 240 round-trip commuting days annually.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now let\u2019s put those numbers into context.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Miami_872_Hours\">Miami. 872 Hours<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>872 hours is almost 22 full 40-hour working weeks.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That means our Miami benchmark effectively gives up the equivalent of more than <strong>five months of full-time working weeks every year<\/strong> simply earning the money needed for rent and physically traveling to and from work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before buying food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before paying for healthcare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before having a life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Miami\u2019s Census median gross rent is $1,758, while the latest BLS occupational wage release puts the Miami metro\u2019s average hourly wage at $32.30.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Census puts the city\u2019s average one-way commute at 27.3 minutes. Put those together, and Miami narrowly tops our comparison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Welcome to paradise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hope you weren\u2019t planning on having much free time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Los_Angeles_870_Hours\">Los Angeles. 870 Hours<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Los Angeles comes within two hours of Miami.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>870 hours a year.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Census data puts median gross rent in Los Angeles at $1,933 and the mean commute at 30.7 minutes. BLS reports an average hourly wage of $37.15 for the Los Angeles metro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The interesting thing about Los Angeles is that people already talk about its traffic and housing costs constantly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But talking about them separately somehow makes them sound normal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>$1,933 rent?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Expensive, but it\u2019s LA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thirty-minute-plus commute?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course. It\u2019s LA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Put them together and convert them into time, however, and you get a different picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Nearly 22 working weeks of your year disappear before other living expenses even enter the equation.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sunshine had better be good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"San_Francisco_860_Hours\">San Francisco. 860 Hours<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>San Francisco has the highest rent in our comparison at $2,476 a month, according to the Census Bureau.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it also has something Miami doesn\u2019t: very high local wages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The average hourly wage across all occupations in the San Francisco-Oakland-Fremont metropolitan area was $48.19 in May 2025, according to BLS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That helps.
