The tape should be long enough to cover about 2-3 inches up the sides of the box. For better security, add an extra strip of tape on each side of the strip in the middle, overlapping them halfway. You should choose which one to use depending on the type of items you intend to pack into the box:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"_The_H-taping_method\">1. If you detect any shifting, open the box and add some more cushioning in it to completely immobilize the items in the carton. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Close the top flaps again and repeat the test.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you make sure that nothing moves inside the box, you can seal it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"How_to_seal_a_cardboard_box\">How to seal a cardboard box<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>All that is left to do now is to seal the box closed. Here is how to close a box with tape:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Run <\/strong>a piece of packing tape down the seam between the folded top flaps, allowing the tape to extend over the sides of the box;<\/li><li><strong>Make <\/strong>two parallel tape lines near the ends of the box (on top of the center line, perpendicularly to it). Alternatively, you can run a strip of tape diagonally to the strip securing the top flaps;<\/li><li><strong>Use <\/strong>the H-method described above to seal the box for extra security.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Your box is ready &#8211; just be sure to <a href=\"\/move\/box-label-system-when-moving\/\">label it properly<\/a>, so you know what\u2019s inside it and can take it directly to the room it belongs to when you arrive at your new home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, the best way to assemble moving boxes is to fold them properly and tape them securely. But what if you don\u2019t have tape?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"How_to_fold_a_box_without_tape\">How to fold a box without tape<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Even though using tape is the best possible way to secure a moving box and prevent it from spilling open during the move, you can make do without tape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are several different methods you can use to fold and seal a cardboard box without tape:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"_Use_the_interlocking_flap_technique\">1. Use the interlocking flap technique<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The interlocking flap technique makes it possible to fold boxes for moving without any adhesive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.mymovingreviews.com\/move\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/interlocking-flap-technique.jpg\" alt=\"Folding moving boxes is not a child's play.\" class=\"wp-image-34457 lazyload\" width=\"310\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/moveadvisor.com\/move\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/interlocking-flap-technique.jpg 359w, https:\/\/moveadvisor.com\/move\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/interlocking-flap-technique-215x300.jpg 215w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 359px) 100vw, 359px\" \/><figcaption>Can you solve the interlocking puzzle?<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>If you choose this option, you need to fold the flaps differently:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Fold down <\/strong>one of the smaller flaps first, then fold one of the larger flaps over it;<\/li><li><strong>Fold <\/strong>the other smaller flap over the folded larger flap;<\/li><li><strong>Take <\/strong>the last larger flap and tuck it under the first smaller flap &#8211; the flaps will overlap one another, closing the box securely.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You can use this technique with both the bottom flaps and the top flaps of a box. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep in mind though the base won\u2019t be very sturdy and will easily burst open if you put heavy items in the box. And the top won\u2019t be securely sealed, so your items won\u2019t be well protected and may even spill out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore, this method is only safe to use when packing lightweight items that are not very vulnerable to damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"_Use_plastic_wrap\">2. Use plastic wrap<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Plastic wrap is your best bet for folding boxes for moving without tape. All you need to do is assemble the box, pack it full, close it, and wrap it in several layers of stretch wrap (making sure you cover the box from all sides). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The cling film will wrap tightly around the box, sealing it off completely and creating a protective layer around it, preventing dust and dirt from getting to your belongings and keeping moisture away. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The plastic material will even add to the strength of the box, minimizing the risk of it collapsing during the move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sealing boxes with plastic wrap, however, is a bit more difficult and time-consuming than taping them and the method is not as cost-effective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"\/move\/plastic-wrap-for-moving\/\">The Many Practical Uses of Plastic Wrap for Moving<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"_Use_ropes_or_straps\">3. Use ropes or straps<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The simplest &#8211; and most efficient way &#8211; to secure moving boxes is to tie them down. You have plenty of options &#8211; nylon ropes, polypropylene ropes, moving straps, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ropes and straps offer an excellent solution for securing moving boxes. They provide a lot of extra support, don\u2019t break easily, can be tied tightly around a box, and can be removed without damaging the carton. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the downside, tying down a box will take more time and effort than taping it. Besides, ropes and straps aren\u2019t very cheap and you will need a lot of them to secure your boxes properly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"_Use_hot_melt_glue\">4. Use hot melt glue<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you don\u2019t have tape, glue is your next best option for sealing moving boxes. The strong adhesive will hold the box together and prevent it from spilling open during the move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The process is quite easy:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Fold <\/strong>the box as you would do when sealing it with tape;<\/li><li><strong>Spread <\/strong>a line of hot melt glue parallel to a flap edge (the edge of one of the larger flaps, folded over the smaller flaps);<\/li><li><strong>Stick <\/strong>the flap to the smaller flaps under it;<\/li><li><strong>Do <\/strong>the same with all larger flaps (stick the bottom flaps first to create a stable base, then, after packing the box full, stick the top flaps to seal the box);<\/li><li><strong>Make sure <\/strong>you allow the glue to dry fully before lifting the cardboard box.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.mymovingreviews.com\/move\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/ready-for-moving.jpg\" alt=\"Your properly folded and securely sealed moving boxes will keep your items safe and sound.\" class=\"wp-image-34461 lazyload\" width=\"470\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/moveadvisor.com\/move\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/ready-for-moving.jpg 600w, https:\/\/moveadvisor.com\/move\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/ready-for-moving-300x229.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption>Assembled, packed, sealed, and ready for moving,<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Your box will be tightly sealed (you will need to cut the cardboard to open it after the move) and your items will be safely contained inside. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unlike packing tape, however, the glue won\u2019t add to the strength of the box, so it\u2019s not a good idea to pack heavy items in a box sealed with glue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"_Use_staples\">5. Use staples<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Staples provide a great way to assemble a cardboard box without tape or glue, but you will need professional gear to do it the right way. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the box is thin, though, you may be able to staple the flaps using your home stapler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Needless to say, you can pack only lightweight, non-fragile items in a thin box, sealed with staples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"_Use_box_latches\">6. Use box latches<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Wondering how to close a box without tape? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consider using box lathes &#8211; they are reusable, close securely, come in multiple sizes, and allow you to open the box without destroying it (so it can be reused).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The only drawbacks are their high price (you can get 10 box latches for about $40-$60) and the fact that they can only be used to close a box (you cannot secure the bottom of a box with a box latch).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now that you know how to tape a box properly &#8211; and even how to assemble and seal a box without tape &#8211; you don\u2019t need to worry about your boxes bursting open during the relocation.
