If you happen to think that a professional mover’s job is as mundane and boring as it gets (I just packed and loaded Moving Box #12, going for #13), then you surely won’t beat your friends for the annual Wildest Imagination Prize.
As long as customers hold their end of the bargain, professional movers and packers rarely question the nature of whatever it is that needs to be packed and moved. Like true professionals, the hired workers concentrate on getting the job done, no matter what.
Movers’ duties are often highly repetitive (that’s why they are so good at what they do, right?), and after many years of working in the relocation industry, most of the pros think that they have seen it all – from having to deal with eccentric clients to having to protect and transport all kinds of totally bizarre items.
Well, some movers may have indeed seen it all, but you haven’t. We give you the top 10 insanely strange items moved by moving companies. From trophy animal heads and taxidermy cats, through pythons all the way to Batmobiles, we’ve got some genuinely strange items moved by moving companies.
The following 10 unusual, peculiar and even extraordinary stories come straight from top professional movers for your enjoyment.
So, enjoy!
1. Trophy animals
You can expect things to get really interesting when customers of professional moving companies turn out to be game hunters. No, we’re not talking about cases when the hunter becomes the hunted – rather, it’s about the type of items that movers may have to confront face to face (literally!) when working on a job at a hunter’s house.
The pros from Mooney’s Moving – a family-owned moving company from outside of Philadelphia, Pa – were told to brace themselves before they visited the home of an avid game hunter. The customer’s extensive collection of stuffed bears, deer heads, buffaloes and lions, to name a few, really took the moving experts by surprise.
“We ended up moving one 35ft truckload of trophy animals. The items weren’t so much heavy as they were awkward to carry. The 8ft tall stuffed bear was especially challenging.”, recalls Steve DeSteffano who runs the moving business together with his brother Mike. “The homeowner’s new neighbors seemed a little surprised seeing all of these animal heads being carried out of the truck.”

2. Taxidermy cats
It’s time you braced yourselves as our list of genuinely uncommon things moved by movers is getting weirder and weirder. Transporting trophy heads of killed animals from one home to another may seem a bit freakish at first, but some experienced movers have definitely seen worse.
Are you familiar with the art of stuffing dead animals with special materials so that they look like they were still alive? Taxidermy! The sheer mention of that word is bound to make the majority of people turn in disgust.
Max Robinson from Guardian Removals – a moving and storage company based in Edinburgh, Scotland, remembers vividly a relocation job that looked a lot like it had been taken straight out of The Twilight Zone.
“We’ve moved plenty of taxidermy, including a particularly interesting collection of cats for an elderly woman. She’d lost 4 cats throughout her life and insisted on having them all stuffed and kept in their house – she also dressed them up and each of them was wearing a knitted jumper!”
3. 13 cats (Yes, thirteen!)
Speaking of cats, this is a good time to emphasize that, under normal circumstances, household movers will not move pets for safety reasons. The same goes for transporting plants in the back of moving trucks too, but it’s the poor animal friends whose lives are at real risk during a house move.
And while it might be okay to ask your selected movers if they would be so kind as to transport your cherished cat for you during a short distance move, asking them to take your thirteen cats may be occasionally viewed as a mild attempt to push your own luck.
The relocation experts from Strong Move – a premier moving company in London – have had such a close encounter of the third thirteen kind.
“One of the strangest things I’ve seen is a lady that requested to load her thirteen cats in the truck too. Generally, we never transport animals in our vans or trucks, but instead of refusing to do it, one of the movers decided to ask her whether all the cats have crates. Her answer was even more shocking than the question – ‘No need for crates. I will put the small kittens in one box and the other cats will find somewhere between the items to lie down during the move.’”
Of course, the experienced movers kindly refused to load the poor animals and advised the lady to use other means of transportation for her beloved cats.

4. Ball Python
A professional mover’s job can sometimes be fun but in general, it is not particularly exciting. One day of hard work is replaced by another day of hard work… until the moment something exotic comes along.
Like, for example, having to move a large snake!
Did we also mention that some of the tasks relocation experts have to complete can also be plain dangerous? Without a doubt, one of the insanely weird things moved by moving companies will have to be a royal python /African rulers would wear them as jewelry!/.
“The weirdest “item” we’ve ever moved was a massive ball python in its huge tank. Not everyone is used to being so close to a giant snake, but its owners assured us that there was nothing to be afraid of since the snake was calm in nature.”, says Galin Kolev – a part of a London-based removals company called Fantastic Removals.
He also shares that their moving team braced the python moving challenge and the curious case from a few years back is still told around their office.

5. A single chair… to the other room
Sometimes the weirdness of a moving job stems from the request itself rather than the specific item to be moved. Which, of course, still contributes to a house moving case that, in the end, is anything but standard.
After all, why have a conventional move when you can have a truly eccentric one at 3 a.m.?
Base your moving company in the City of Angels where the show business thrives and you are bound to get unique celeb requests that can easily get you wow-ed. The experts from the LA-based moving company NorthStar Moving have moved sculpture angels all over the second most populous city in the United States. Still, the most unexpected call they got was from an unnamed A-lister at 3 in the morning.
But what needed to be moved with such extreme urgency, you may wonder? It turned out that the Los Angeles celebrity wanted a chair moved from their dining room to the living room. Right away! And it was an easily lifted chair that even a small child could move.
Hollywood rules!
6. Batman’s car (Batmobile)
At times, professional movers keep all the fun to themselves, don’t they? It’s funny how an ordinary looking household move can turn into an exciting moving adventure in split seconds. After all, could an ordinary person have the once-in-a-lifetime chance to handle Batman’s car?
The Batmobile! Even if you’re not a great fan of the superhero Batman and his crime-fighting activities, you should still be able to visualize his state of the art armored fighting motor vehicle that is cleverly kept in the Batcave. I mean, come on, wouldn’t you just give anything for the chance to take a ride in the Batmobile?
Alison Bradley – a senior marketing expert at London Cleaning Team – worked for a moving company for 3 years and says she’s seen her share of strange items moved by movers. Once a client called them and wanted them to move a fake car but forgot to mention that it was a life-size replica of Batman’s car. Imagine the surprise on the movers’ faces!
They’ve also been asked by another customer to move huge statues of Wallace and Gromit, accompanied by around 100 statues of chickens. Oh, the fun!
7. Love toys
One of the best pieces of advice you can receive when moving house is to take all valuable items with you in order to keep them safe until you reach the safety of your new home. No matter how much you trust the movers you’ve hired, don’t hand them over any valuables but think of the best way to transport them yourself.
Not surprisingly, valuables may also include sensitive items such as… ahem, love toys.
T.J. Peterson from Oz Moving & Storage tells an interesting story about the time when they were doing a move in Chelsea.
“Our crew noticed lots of buzzing coming from one of the boxes. The buzzing never seemed to stop, adding to the mystery that made the crew speculate what was making the noise. When unpacking, the movers got their answer; the buzzing was being made by love toys which had been left on. I’m sure it was funny to the movers, hopefully the client can see past any embarrassment to find the humor there.”
8. Cremation urn for ashes
Speaking of both valuable and sensitive items for transportation, some things are simply so irreplaceable that the mere thought of having them damaged or broken during a house move is enough to send paralyzing chills down a person’s spine.
And those relocation instances are exactly where the professionalism and experience of your moving crew will make a huge difference. You need professionals who will handle your prized possessions with the care and caution you pay for. But where can you find such great movers?
Speaking of unusual items moved by moving companies, what could possibly match the last remains of the person you have loved your entire life?
T.J. Peterson from Oz Moving has another gripping story to share with us.
“We were told about a customer’s vase prior to her move. She wanted to stress to us that the vase was very important and to take any precautions necessary. It turns out this was an urn with the ashes of the woman’s husband who passed. It was a nerve-racking move to say the least, but was completed without any damage and thus we narrowly avoided having a curse cast upon us.”
9. U.S. goodies
When moving abroad, people sometimes choose to take with them the weirdest of things either to remind them of their own country or to make the acclimatization period a bit easier. Or maybe even both at the same time. Ask top-rated international movers and they’ll probably tell you the same thing.
Ali Wenzke has become a moving expert by having to move house 10 times in 11 years. She keeps a moving blog /The Art of Happy Moving/ where she shares her relocation experience with the world. She tells the story of an American family moving to Denmark with three kids, ages 8-13, and their choice to take items that would probably seem a bit absurd to an international mover.
“Even though the family had limited space to send their belongings overseas, they filled several large plastic boxes with non-perishable food items and household products. They packed all their favorites: cereals, cans of black beans, Ortega taco mix, Lysol toilet supplies, bars of Dove soap, Crest toothpaste, stain remover, and Bounce dryer sheets.”
“From an outsider’s perspective, you might question spending money to ship items you can get at the grocery store. From a mom’s point of view, these comforts from home were priceless. The family opened up the boxes filled with U.S. goodies several weeks after their arrival in Denmark. It felt like Christmas to see their taco mix again. One man’s folly is another mom’s treasure.”
10. Red Bull Voting Booth
Our list of the top 10 insanely weird items moved by movers ends with possibly the bizarrest of them all! Imagine a situation where your selected movers come to your house, take a look at a household item they are expected to pack up and move, and then WOW! – they have absolutely no idea what that thing is called or what it does.
Do you think professional movers find themselves is such awkward situations from time to time – to not have the slightest idea of what they are up against?
The experts at PockitShip – the DC metro area’s only local on-demand pickup, delivery and moving company – say they have moved everything from car engines, pinball machines, vintage coke machines, whisky barrels, jukeboxes and even an antique wooden ice chest. Still, the most bizarre and coolest thing they had to relocate was…. a Red Bull Voting Booth.
Wait, a what?
“Maybe not the most bizarre but the coolest thing we moved was the Red Bull Voting Booth which was a vending machine w/ a curtain where folks voted on their favorite Red Bull and it was dispensed to them. This machine was actually a 500lb vending machine (think soda) w/ a custom curtain and data capture touch screen that was somewhat difficult and technical to move. “
BONUS: Moving the Vatican Library
Even if you’re an avid reader with an extensive book collection in your own home, you’ll know perfectly well that there’s a huge difference between moving your home library to another home and moving the Vatican Library to another location.
Located in the Vatican City, the Vatican Apostolic Library is regarded as one of the oldest libraries in the world (established in 1475), with arguably one of the most significant collections of historical texts – 75,000 codices from throughout history + roughly 1.1 million printed books.
Moving the Bibliotheca Apostolica Vaticana (in Latin) may not be the weirdest thing that specialized movers had to handle, but it is surely a unique moving challenge that requires extensive experience in similar logistic jobs and enhanced problem-solving skills and strategies.
Here you can learn more intriguing info about that extraordinary relocation project.
So, did you enjoy our exceptional list of weird things transported by movers? We hope that you did.
But even if you didn’t (really!?!), don’t forget that you’d be better off trusting top-rated professional movers to do the non-standard job for you. Remember: costly damage to your unusual items is never worth it.
