10 reasons to not hire movers
Don’t ever make the mistake of hiring a reputable and affordable moving company!

Yes, yes, it’s true that high quality moving services are always in high demand as more and more families are starting to realize that nothing beats timely professional assistance during the extremely transitional period of a house move. However, home movers who are thinking of hiring a reputable, trustworthy and affordable moving company have absolutely no idea what they are getting themselves into.

Years of relocation experience, remarkable efficiency, exceptional reliability, moving day safety, peace of mind, stress-free relocation, and possible cost savings? Who would possibly need all that during a residential move?

You surely don’t, right?

If you’re still unsure how to plan your own move, here are the top 10 reasons why you should never hire a moving company.

1. Too much strategy gets into your head

why you should not hire a mover
Keep in mind that most moving companies are pretty smart and they will surely use proven strategic moves to trick you into having a smooth, stress-free and affordable move.

You should never get in touch with a reputable moving company because once you do, they will most likely want to send a moving expert over to your place for a visual survey of your household. They will probably tell you that this is a standard procedure to assess any possible problems and obstacles come moving day, as well as to quote you a more accurate moving costs estimate.

However, reputable movers have no idea who they are dealing with – you weren’t born yesterday to let them sweet-talk you into having a smooth and affordable house move, right? Come on, this is a house move, not a game of chess, so you won’t tolerate any proven strategic moves by trustworthy moving companies with the purpose of secretly lowering your overall moving costs. You enjoy meeting problems head-on and your favorite moving day breakfast is Complications seasoned with a pinch of Headaches.

2. Who needs money when you have self-belief?

why you should not hire movers
Moving experts will tell you that it is never cost-effective to perform a cross country move on your own. Well, you know deep inside that you can prove them wrong, even if that means breaking your favorite piggy bank.

Arguably, the best reason for not using a moving company is that once you hire a reputable and affordable mover, you may be forced to listen to good advice on how to lower your overall relocation costs even further. Can you imagine that? Your top rated moving partner may choose to go as far as to give you some pointers to save money on your move, or more frequently – to offer you a healthy discount for being a first time customer, for moving during the off-peak season, or for another valid reason that makes sense under the circumstances.

Of course, you would never accept any sweet offers and thoughtful suggestions to pay less for your move, right? You’re probably too eager to drain your savings account and will perform a self-move the way you picture the entire relocation adventure in your head regardless of what your common sense is telling you. You want to prove all nay-sayers, doubters and moving experts wrong by spending a fortune on a risky long distance self-move across the country.

That’s right, break-the-bank self-move or bust!

3. You have all the time in the world

Reasons not to hire movers
Highly efficient movers can save you a staggering amount of valuable time but they probably don’t realize how relative you consider your own time to be. What are just a few days saved compared to the eternal flow of time?

Don’t hire a good moving company because good movers are known for possessing remarkable efficiency which enables them to save their clients loads of valuable time during their moves. In fact, the best local and nationwide moving companies encourage their employees to pack, load, transport, and unload their customers’ belongings with a high efficiency factor so that every customer is left happy and satisfied with the moving services.

You, however, would never fall for this pathetic ruse. Why should you hire a moving company that will complete the move in a matter of hours when you can get it done in the course of a few days? You’d rather prolong the great fun of moving house as much as you possibly can, right? Besides, you strongly support the groundbreaking theory that time is relative, so what are just a few wasted days in the face of a lifetime? Therefore, if you have placed a self-respectful price tag on your time, don’t ever use the fast and efficient services of a professional moving company.

4. Resourcefulness and experience are not your cup of tea

Reasons why you should not use movers
In reality, movers don’t need to be as strong as oxen to complete a complicated moving job quickly and safely. Still, when it comes to the process of moving house, you just know you’re much more experienced and creative than they are.

A good reason to never use a moving company is that they will most likely send highly experienced, rigorously trained and extremely resourceful people to help you move out – professionals who seem to always find the best way out of every difficult moving related situation.

How rude of them! Don’t reputable moving companies know that you don’t really like having experienced and resourceful people while you’re moving to another home? The truth is that the effective problem-solving abilities of other people kind of get on your nerves. After all, you won’t mind too much getting stuck while hauling your precious piano downstairs with a makeshift system of ropes, old blankets, a few golf balls, and your son’s skateboard. Even if you end up damaging that one-of-a-kind priceless heirloom which your great grandfather used to play on, you’re still going to feel right about it because specialty piano movers are just too experienced and creative for your liking.

5. Quality packing is for losers

Reasons to never use a moving company
Don’t hire a reputable mover if you really think that the process of protecting your most loved furniture pieces is a waste of time.

A great reason to never use movers is that most moving companies have become so daring as to offer speedy and safe packing services to their valued customers. But that is not all – experienced packers will arrive with their own high quality packing supplies and moving equipment of the required types and amount, and will start packing up your entire home quickly and safely.

Not on your watch! You’ve always wanted to spend hours of quality time hunting for decent moving containers on your own, trying to figure out which pieces of old clothes can successfully substitute packing paper and bubble wrap, and working out all the little details of how to safely protect all the breakable and fragile items in your home, your delicate antiques and priceless family heirlooms during the relocation journey. You think quality packing is for losers, so there’s absolutely no way you would ever let pro packers get the most time-consuming moving task out of your own winning hands.

Congratulations, you just won the first prize for most damaged items during a DIY move!

6. You are the master of your own Fate

Why should I hire a moving company?
“Moving insurance? No, thanks. What could possibly happen to my priceless collection of Belgian beer glasses?”

Another disadvantage to hiring a moving company is that if you choose a reputable company that offers a good level of liability insurance, your household belongings will be well protected against accidental damage during transit. And if something bad does happen to any of your prized possessions (literally anything can happen while a person is moving from one home to another), then your moving partner will compensate you for the corresponding damage or loss.

However, you never cared much for insurance, remember? You are in full control of your moving adventure and your sheer will won’t let bad things happen to your stuff while they are taken out of the house, loaded into the moving vehicle, transported hundreds of miles away, unloaded from the truck, and finally taken inside your new home. What could possibly happen to them during that highly transitional period anyway? Moving insurance is for anyone who hasn’t yet mastered the art of controlling their own Fate, wouldn’t you agree?

7. Property damage is overrated

Why use a moving company?
Yes, you’re right. Property damage when moving house is ridiculously overrated.

Hiring a professional moving company with long years of experience and proven reputation will only keep your two homes perfectly intact during the entire relocation process, so think twice before making the rookie moving mistake of hiring a good mover. Your hired packers and movers will cover the floors with suitable protective materials, will wrap your heavier and larger household items with protective furniture blankets, and will use specialized moving equipment to avoid untimely property damage whatsoever.

The thing is that property damage would be the least of your self-moving worries, is it not? Why should you care about a few chipped walls, damaged floors, or broken banisters when you’re moving OUT of the property? And if you happen to damage some parts of your new home while moving IN due to insufficient moving experience, then it’s also okay because you have already planned a contingency fund in your preliminary moving budget. Besides, you strongly believe that nothing beats the satisfaction of sacrificing your hard-earned money and valuable post relocation time for some costly new home repairs.

8. You don’t need movers as strong as bulls

Reasons why you should not use a moving company
If you must be completely honest, you would have used exactly the same method of taking your heavy and bulky household items safely out of your home.

Another good reason to not hire a good moving company is that they will send over to your home a team of relocation experts who are physically strong and healthy, ready to overcome any presented difficulties and possible complications with hard work and little complaining. The rigorous training your hired laborers have been through will help them speed up the whole moving process and even make it as if time itself would slow down its notorious sprint.

But hey, who needs strong helpers who have an excellent idea what efficiency and safety are all about? You don’t, that’s for sure. You have your close friend Mike who lives just a few time zones away and he will definitely just up and fly over to give you a hand with that heavy couch and the huge kitchen appliances you’re taking with you. Besides, your neighbor Phil owes you a big favor and he won’t mind helping you lift and carry 42 heavy cardboard boxes despite his recent surgery to repair his abdominal hernia.

 9. You’re a fan of unconventional transportation

why not to hire movers
Who needs experienced movers with modern moving equipment when you can put your old (t)rusty wheelbarrow to good use?

Another great reason why you should not hire professional movers is that the trustworthy moving company you have chosen will not only arrive at your moving day doorstep with a reliable moving truck of the right storage space, but the pros will also bring all the necessary moving equipment and packing supplies. But most importantly, the hired laborers will come knocking on your door with years of moving experience and extensive training.

All of that, of course, is ridiculous! You once watched a movie where the protagonist rented a moving truck without any problems, so you know exactly what it takes to rent a moving vehicle of the right size. Besides, as far as you can remember, your high school pal Dave used to have a decent pickup truck you can probably borrow for a day or two. And frankly, you do think that adequate moving equipment, and especially utility dollies, are grossly overrated. Wouldn’t the old wheelbarrow in your garage be more efficient than even the most modern furniture dolly? Of course it would!

10. Too little stress is not enough for you

10 reasons why you should not hire a moving company
If you just can’t get enough of moving stress and its side effects, then hiring a top rated moving company to help you move is certainly not for you.

Here’s another excellent reason to never hire a moving company – they will take most of the relocation burden off your shoulders by completing the majority of the most stressful moving tasks instead of you, and thus make you feel left out of your own complicated move, standing aside like a mere spectator with too much free time on their hands.

But you won’t let that clever trick slide, right? How dare they attempt in some way to take away from you the very thing that makes you feel alive during your relocation! Reliable moving companies don’t really understand that you need the moving stress more than the air you’ll be breathing on your moving day. By forcing you to be carefree and relaxed throughout your house move, skilled moving professionals will blatantly steal the only relocation side effect charged with enough complaining power to last you at least six months. And not having experienced any moving stress, how are you supposed to complain to your (Facebook) friends now?

  1. Great article guys! I think I can sense a bit sarcasm, which however really makes it fun to read. Yes, some people should not hire a moving company due to many reasons and that is totally fine, yet there are those who know their limitations and know that they need movers to help them relocate. The same happens in the auto transport industry. Quite often people think it would better if they drive to their destination, across the country, without considering all the costs involved in that. And that is fine some people the time on their hands, and the money to do that, still most choose to move their vehicle with an auto transport and managemnt company like us. So, people are in theri right to choose what is better for them and we always advice them to go just that. Based on personal preferences and experience, as well as budget, to either drive or ship their car with an auto transport company like Corsia Logistics.

    Cheers to all!

  2. Joshua, really enjoyed one of your other articles but this one was disappointing. Your title and your points are good attention getters but you've over generalized the entire moving industry. Your points are certainly helpful for the young DIY mover and individuals who have been swindled by slick salesman. But to suggest that all moving companies in our industry are trying to take advantage of people is unrealistic. I fully agree that the general public is not stupid. But the demand for moving companies is driven by an intelligent public. My moving company moves 1000 customers a year and sweet talking them has never been necessary. Our customer call because we have a great reputation and they are tired of moving themselves. This is a great promotional article for UHaul:)

    1. Sorry for my earlier comments. Egg on my face for not reading more carefully. Great article!!

  3. I would recommend to avail the services of a professional moving company as they are one of the most reliable option, with a team of professional that aware of best moving techniques and tools in order to move items like furniture and appliances in safe and secure manner. Secondly, they are more efficient in handling bulky items, lastly, they offer you with a peace of mind, which is something essential when it comes to moving which is quite stressful and tiring process.

  4. Amazing and very informative guide. It is a good habit to check whether the company that is offering you moving services at an affordable cost. Have a look at the company website and view the customer’s feedback and ratings. This will help in determining what services the company is offering so that you can choose which company suits you.
