How to pack frameless posters when moving

If you have posters on the walls that are not framed, then follow these packing steps to protect them for the upcoming house move:

  • Step 1. BUY poster roll tubes for your non-framed posters. Such poster tubes – made from plastic or hard craft paper – will offer the best level of protection for your valuable posters and will ensure nothing bad happens to them on the road. Order your poster roll tubes online or purchase them from the nearest home improvement store. A basic poster tube costs around $4-$5.
  • Step 2. PREPARE a stack of white, acid-free packing paper.
  • Step 3. REMOVE the frameless posters from the walls. In most cases, they will be fixed to the walls with the help of pieces of tape or thumbtacks. Exercise extra caution to avoid tearing a poster accidentally during this step.
  • Step 4. PLACE a sheet of white packing paper on a hard surface – a large table will do just fine.
  • Step 5. POSITION a frameless poster on a sheet of wrapping paper so that the picture faces the ceiling. Also, the bottom edge of the poster should be lined up with the bottom edge of the packing paper.
  • Step 6. ROLL the poster together with the sheet of packing paper underneath it. Do this rolling step slowly and make sure the resulting roll is right enough to fit inside the poster tube.
  • Step 7. TUCK IN the ends of the sheet of wrapping paper as if it were a piece of candy.
  • Step 8. USE a tiny piece of tape to secure the open seam and keep it from unfolding inside the roll tube. Make sure the tape does not come into direct contact with the poster itself.
  • Step 9. SLIDE IN the rolled poster inside the poster tube. Do this carefully to avoid damage.
  • Step 10. PLACE a few pieces of soft packing paper on the top, if necessary, to serve as extra padding and prevent the poster from moving inside the tube during transport.
  • Step 11. FIT the plastic end cap of the poster tube and use a bit of tape to secure it.
  • Step 12. ATTACH a label to each tube to know which poster is inside. After arriving in the new home, you may not need to open up and hang all the posters you have brought with you.

NOTE: You may be able to fit more than one poster inside a poster tube at the same time.

How to pack framed posters when moving

If you have posters that are framed and hung on the walls, then follow these packing steps to protect them for the upcoming house move:

  • Step 1. BUY picture boxes for your framed posters. A picture box costs around $7 and comes in various sizes to fit your packing needs. If you’re not sure about the size, then get adjustable picture boxes (consisting of four pieces that can be made to fit).
  • Step 2. PREPARE large clean sheets of bubble wrap.
  • Step 3. TAKE DOWN the framed posters from the walls and arrange them all on a large table or another flat surface.
  • Step 4. USE a damp cloth to remove the dust (if any) from the frames. You can also use your vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment to do the same thing.
  • Step 5. CUT a piece of thick cardboard that matches the size of the frame. Then, use pieces of painter’s tape to fix the cardboard cutout over the face of the frame to safeguard the plastic or glass sheet that’s in front of the poster.
  • Step 6. WRAP the entire framed poster in sheets of bubble wrap, then fix those protective sheets with tape.
  • Step 7. INSERT the framed poster inside a medium or large picture box. If the poster is too big, then you should use an adjustable picture box to accommodate the frame.
  • Step 8. DO a quick safety test. Lift the picture box and shake it slightly – the framed poster inside should not move at all. If it does, be it even a little, add more padding materials to immobilize it.
  • Step 9. SECURE the picture box using pieces of packing tape.
  • Step 10. LABEL the box so that you know exactly which poster is inside it.
