One of the most important things you must realize when you’re moving from one place to another is that your postal address is going to change.
What this means in reality is that unless you change your address with the United States Postal Service (USPS), you’re going to stop receiving your regular mail. Why?
It’s simple enough: your mail will continue to be delivered to your old address but you won’t be there anymore to get it.
Remember to file a Change of Address (COA) request with the USPS to keep getting your mail after you’re already in the new house or apartment. You’re recommended to change your address before you move out (at least two weeks before Moving day).
The good news is that you can also change your postal address right after the move is complete – it’s not ideal but it’s still OK.
So, you must change your address when moving.

Make sure you go to a USPS office prepared. What this means is that you should know in advance your new address in full, whether you’ll want a temporary change of address or a permanent change of address, and whether you’ll complete an individual change of address or a family change of address.
Will you be charged to change your address at a post office?
